Clinical Nurse Specialist serves as a clinical expert providing teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, and systems improvement in a specific practice area or with a specific patient population. Coordinates and guides clinical activities/projects of nurses within a practice area. Being a Clinical Nurse Specialist collaborates with members of the health care team to design and implement safe, cost-effective, and evidence-based care strategies. May require a master's degree in nursing. Additionally, Clinical Nurse Specialist requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Clinical Nurse Specialist manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Clinical Nurse Specialist typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • An excellent opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Specialist currently exists at Cottage Children's Medical Center, a part of not-for-profit Cottage Health in Santa Barbara, California. You will practice in the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at our Children's Medical Center, a pediatric regional referral center for the care of infants, toddlers, and children.

    Our 22-bed NICU (served by a dedicated RN/RCP Transport team) provides specialized nursing care for critically ill newborns ranging in age from 0-28 days. You will also collaborate with Clinical Nurse Specialists throughout Cottage Health (PICU, Pediatrics, Neurosciences, Adult Critical Care and Emergency).

    Qualifications include:

    • Master's degree in nursing (MSN)
    • RN license in the State of California
    • Minimum of three years of NICU nursing experience
    • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) certification by the California Board of Registered Nursing
    • National Certification in area of clinical specialty (NICU)
    • BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
    • NRP certification (AHA/American Academy of Pediatrics)
