Clinical Nurse Specialist serves as a clinical expert providing teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, and systems improvement in a specific practice area or with a specific patient population. Coordinates and guides clinical activities/projects of nurses within a practice area. Being a Clinical Nurse Specialist collaborates with members of the health care team to design and implement safe, cost-effective, and evidence-based care strategies. May require a master's degree in nursing. Additionally, Clinical Nurse Specialist requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Clinical Nurse Specialist manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Clinical Nurse Specialist typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required. The emergency room is one of the nation's most technologically advanced intensive care and emergency facilities.

    The Emergency Department ED and Intensive Care Unit ICU Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS will oversee staff development in the ER department. Under a new Clinical Practice Model, the Emergency Room ER and Critical Care Unit CCU Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS will focus on staff development and lead efforts related to the identification, implementation and evaluation of unit specific education, patient education and evidence-based practice.

    Reporting to the Nurse Director of Education and Nursing Director of Acute Care, the Emergency Room ER and Critical Care Unit CCU Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS will utilize the Clinical Leadership Model to optimize the role resulting in a highly educated and competent advanced practice staff that produces positive patient outcomes.

    The National Nursing Staff Development Model has been adopted as the theoretical foundation for this role. The Emergency Department ED and Intensive Care Unit ICU Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS will focus on the following: orientation, competency program, in-service education, continuing education, career development/role transition, research and scholarship, and establish academic partnerships with the local colleges and universities. The Emergency Room ER and Critical Care Unit CCU Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS will work in one of the most technologically advanced emergency care facilities in the nation with ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient-focused care.
