Summary:
The Manager of Patient Services Nursing Education (PSNE) is responsible for overseeing the Department Based Nursing Educators and Central Nursing Educational Specialists who assess, develop, implement and evaluate nursing orientation, ongoing staff education and competency validation for nursing staff throughout patient services at Covenant HealthCare. The manager collaborates with all department and central education specialists to meet the educations needs of the nursing staff. This position is responsible to collaborate with Patient Service Directors, Clinical Outcome Nurse Specialists (CONS) and the quality department. This position ensures that proper education is implemented and effectiveness evaluated based upon regulatory requirements and quality deficiencies that meet the educational needs of the nursing staff and quality outcomes for patient care. The PSNE Manager collaborates with Human Resources to develop onboarding practices and oversee professional development initiatives for nursing. Demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for oversight of day to day functioning of the nursing education department.
Builds effective working relationships with educators and other partners and fosters a spirit of teamwork in areas of responsibility within Covenant.
Willingly shares authority and delegates responsibility through the empowerment of Department Based Nursing Educators, Central Nursing Educational Specialists and Unit Based Educators.
Accountable for the distribution and evaluation of education to nursing staff in patient services.
Responsible for hiring, motivating, communicating, coaching, appraising, and disciplining direct reports, while adhering to policies, standards, and pertinent regulations.
Provides a central resource for nursing education at Covenant HealthCare.
Upholds an ongoing current education calendar for staff resource.
Ensures open communication and optimal functioning among all educators.
Supports the education team following adult learning principles for optimal education comprehension.
Collaborates with members of the health care team to provide quality education programs that are evidence-based and meet quality outcomes.
Assures educational needs are met which fulfill regulatory requirements for patient services nursing staff.
Participates in continuing education that meets the American Nurses Credentialing Center criteria and the Michigan Nurses Associate CE criteria.
Participates in hospital wide continuous quality improvement activities.
Participates as a leader or member of key departmental and hospital committees.
Serves as a consultant for educational activities within Covenant HealthCare.
Keeps abreast of current research and standards of care to enhance the education provided for Patient Services staff.
Demonstrates effective proactive situational leadership while working within the framework of Covenant’s Mission, Vision and Values.
Prepares departmental operating budget and manages their financials performances, projects volume/activity, manages net income and controls expenses.
Facilitates nursing professional development initiatives (clinical ladder, nurse residency, staff development).
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Current Michigan licensure to practice as an RN.
Bachelor’s degree in nursing required.
Master’s Degree preferred.
Leadership experience preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years’ clinical experience required.
Minimum of two (2) years’ education experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Computer competence, including Microsoft Office, Lawson, Halogen and Outlook.
Knowledge of standard office and A/V equipment.
Clinical expertise.
Knowledge and expertise in application of adult learning principles.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Background in application of adult learning principles required.
Ability to present education in front of large groups.
Must be able to work well with the public and able to be tactful in often hectic and stressful situations.
Sound judgement in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.
Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships and communication.
Ability to remediate and plan for performance improvement.
