  • Duties

    • The responsibilities listed are at the full performance level.
    • Prepares sketches and develops layouts, construction details and installation drawings, plus other drafting duties including the final plan and profile sheet.
    • Participates in the development, definition, and documentation of engineering design requirements under the leadership of a senior engineer.
    • Performs land survey work that requires very exacting measurements obtained under difficult conditions, such as steep grades; frequent river crossings; or remote areas where railroads, roads, or other more common routes are unavailable.
    • Acts as inspector on timber sale and/or public work road construction contracts doing routine, established inspection duties.
    • Inspects an entire project of limited size or complexity or a minor part of a large project such as a forest road construction project that includes only clearing, grading, and drainage structures.

    Qualifications

    In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    GS-05
    Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-04 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: assisting higher grade technicians in the design of roads and related structures such as culverts and retaining walls; and/or making computations from tables to estimate road locations; and/or preparing, inspecting, and processing data using computerized road design systems.
    OR
    Bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics (at least 6 of the 24 semester hours must have been in drafting if the position has been designated by a drafting area of specialization);
    OR
    Combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university with courses related to the occupation of the position.

    GS-06
    Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: observing and inspecting structures being constructed to ensure they meet standards and work practices; and/or conducting survey work for facilities, roads, and related structures; and/or collecting, computing, and analyzing data from field notes for technical support to the civil engineering staff.

    GS-07
    Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-06 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: participating in the development and documentation of engineering design requirements for engineering projects under the leadership of a senior engineer; and/or inspecting projects under construction for compliance with plans specifications; and/or performing land survey work under difficult conditions such as steep grades, river crossings or remote areas for setting construction stakes.
    OR
    One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: Engineering, Construction Management, or Surveying).
    OR
    Combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

    Education

    See above for education that may be qualifying for the GS-05 and GS-07 grade levels. There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for the GS-06 grade level.
