Educator - Year Round, Salaried Exempt Position
The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership (Hurricane Island) is a transformative learning
community on Hurricane Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine. Our mission is to integrate science education,
research, and leadership development through year-round educational programs and a seasonal,
environmentally-sustainable island community. Through experiential education programs and research
opportunities in STEM disciplines we aim to excite people about doing science and about being leaders in the
next wave of scientific discovery and environmental conservation.
Position Description
The Educator works closely with both the Director of Education & Programs and the Education Manager to
implement delivery of Hurricane Island’s hands-on, experiential science education and leadership programs.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with schools and other programs to deliver inspiring student
programming for the next generation of scientifically literate community leaders who are taking action for a
healthy environment and economy. The Educator’s primary responsibility is to provide unique and engaging
programs that make the scientific process accessible through direct service work with students in classrooms
and on Hurricane Island.
This position will be mainland based during the academic year and will work primarily with middle and high
school students attending regional schools in and around Penobscot Bay. During our May 1-October 1 “island
season” this position will periodically work on Hurricane Island to support program delivery to schools
coming to the island from across Maine and other states. The Educator is a fully benefited position eligible for
health, dental, and life insurances, retirement benefits, and paid time off.
General Job Responsibilities
Collaborate with school teachers, program leaders, and Hurricane Island staff to design and deliver
holistic learning opportunities and curriculum that is aligned with Hurricane Island’s teaching
philosophies, program goals, and student needs.
Education & Training
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in science, education, environmental, multi- or
low-income communities, immigrant communities, LGBTQ communities, people with special needs,
and other groups that are underrepresented in the field of environmental education.
