    Responsible for the effective and efficient management of surgical programs and services.

    You will oversee the clinical and administrative aspects of the Surgical Service, including budget and fiscal management, personnel management, strategic planning, program development, quality management, and assuring that the clinical and administrative functions are integrated to provide optimum utilization of the available resources.

    To qualify for this position, you must meet the

    Basic Requirements:

    • Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met
    • Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation

    • Basic Requirements:

    United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy


    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
    • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

    Residency Training:
    Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification

    VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)

    Approved residencies are:
    (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences


    • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
    • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
    • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
    • Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English

    Preferred Experience:
    Managerial or Supervisory experience preferred


    • Board certification or board eligible in a surgical specialty

    Physical Requirements:

    Heavy lifting (45# or more), moderate carrying (up to 45#), reaching above shoulders, use of both hands and legs, use of fingers, prolonged walking and standing, intermittent crawling, kneeling, and bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far binocular correctable to 20/40, vision, hearing (aide permitted), mental and emotional stability.

    The clinical duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: o Provide preoperative, operative, and postoperative care to our patients.

    o Assist in the assessment and management of all faculty, students, residents and staff in the surgical service.

    o Assist with data analysis, clinic and operating (OR) management as well as problem solving (ERLR, EEO, patient advocate issues, etc.) o Provides guidance and clinical supervision for the nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, and health technicians assigned to Surgery and Specialty Care (SSC), and Ambulatory Care Services (ASC).

    o Provides guidance and supervision for the medical students assigned to the SSC/ASC.
    o Participates and attends medical center committee meetings as assigned by the Chief of Staff.
    o Assists in the development, implementation, and expansion of programs in the SSC/ASC.
    o Participates in the selection of new staff and provides input on staff assigned in their area.

    o Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, to include but not limited to Process Improvement Action Teams, Root Cause Analysis, and Peer Review.

    o Provides quality patient care to both inpatient and outpatients.

    o Exhibits leadership in initiating change in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from evidence-based research and studies.

    o Keeps informed of developments in the management treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.

    o Successfully integrates patient care activities with other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community, such as Social Work, Prosthetics, and Nursing Homes.

    o Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients and their families, veterans and their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous and tactful manner.

    o Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
    o Promotes teamwork and harmonious working environment.
    o Provides customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
    o Supports the medical center's mission, vision, goals, and objectives.
    o Supports the medical center-wide research mission.
    o Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes and other aspects of patient care.
    o Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Competencies:

    Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

    Board certified or board eligible.
    Completion of an ACGME or AOA Accredited Residency.
    BLS/ACLS Certified.

    Pay:
