  • Duties

    Duties include but are not limited to the following:

    • The Anesthesia Section will provide our Veterans twenty-four hour anesthesia coverage for elective and emergency procedures with the highest standard of anesthesia delivery.
    • CRNAs (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists) practice according to state statues, regulations, and VA institutional policies. CRNAs function within the scope of practices as delineated by the Chief of Anesthesiology.
    • Perform a pre-anesthetic evaluation, patient history and physical, which includes collecting preoperative consults and data.
    • Provide education to patients regarding the planned anesthesia method. Education includes anesthesia risks, benefits and alternative anesthesia methods.
    • Administer general anesthesia, regional anesthesia and monitored anesthesia care for surgical patients. Record all vital signs and events of the procedure.
    • Competency in the placement and management of spinal, thoracic and lumbar epidurals, brachia! plexus blocks, upper and lower extremity blocks. Placement of IVs, arterial lines, central lines and pulmonary artery catheter placements.
    • Accompany patients to the PACU or SICU and provide comprehensive report to the receiving staff.
    • Evaluate postoperative patients for any anesthesia related complications.
    • Respond to emergency situations by providing air-way management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques in order to perform necessary resuscitation procedures.
    • Perform as a mentor, preceptor, or as a nurse educator providing didactic and clinical instruction for graduate-level nurse anesthesia students and/or other anesthesia care providers.
    • Participate in a team approach to ensure appropriate patient assessments, anticipate patient care needs, prevent avoidable complications, and achieve optimum patient conditions.
    • Demonstrate ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care.
    • Participate in an on-going Quality Assurance Program within the anesthesia section.
      Participate in the anesthesia section In-service Education Program as a participant and educator.

    Preferred Experience and Certifications
    • Minimum of at least two years of successful practice as a Nurse Anesthetist providing medical care to patients

    • Demonstrated excellence in written/verbal communication and time management
    • Demonstrated ability to use computer systems in support of patient care delivery
    • At least five-years' experience of medical practice with demonstrated knowledge and awareness of health needs of patients in Anesthesiology or Surgical Service

    Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
    • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.



    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-7 CRNA Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. May be required to don protective equipment in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. Responsible for the reprocessing of reusable medical equipment, according to the medical center policies. Required to use available safe patient handling lifting devices in all clinical areas. May also be exposed to Veterans who are combative, secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
