    • With minimal supervision processes, prepares, analyzes, and reports results for samples submitted by Agency field staff involved in OSHA compliance monitoring.
    • Contacts field compliance staff to fill in data gaps on sampling forms, clarify analytical request, and assist with data interpretation.
    • Reviews analytical data obtained by other chemists for technical and mathematical accuracy, and reviews project reports prepared by other chemists for clarity and technical validity in a timely manner.
    • Performs complex and unusual technical and analytical assignments requiring critical thinking and the ability to modify established procedure.
    • Provides technical guidance in area (s) or expertise to other analysts, technicians and compliance officers, advising and assisting them via phone calls or email communication.

    Qualifications

    The Chemistry series (1320) has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR). To qualify for this position, applicants must also meet the specialized experience requirements. The IOR for this position is:

    Basic Requirements:

    Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

    or

    Combination of education and experience - course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    In addition to meting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

    For the GS-11: At least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-09, or equivalent. Examples of specialized experience include:

    • Advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and analysis for substances to which workers may be exposed.
    • Knowledge of and experience developing methods to be used for the collection of industrial hygiene samples.
    • Knowledge and/or experience with OSHA chemical exposure standards.
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with others in completing complex projects.
    • Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures.

    Education

    To qualify for this position solely on education, in addition to meeting the basic education requirement, the following education may be used to substitute for specialized experience:

    For the GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree.
