Quality Control Chemist

  • Obtain samples and perform various testing and chemical analysis required in the production and shipment of

    compounds produced at the Gaylord Chemical Plant. Participate in development of analytical techniques as

    necessary for new products, revised specifications and new processes. Interact with plant personnel and

    customers to provide data. Manage the handling of data using the plant quality system.

    • Ensure personal safety and safety of co-workers through proper use of personal protective equipment
    during sampling and testing activities.
    • Maintain up-to-date MSDS for chemicals used by operators and laboratory personnel for testing
    purposes. Ensure chemicals are properly identified, stored and disposed of in an environmentally and

    regulatory acceptable manner.

    • Actively participates in plant safety activities, review of proposed changes and make recommendations
    as appropriate with respect to sampling and laboratory facilities and routine.
    • Maintain personally or initiate actions by others as necessary to maintain test equipment in calibration
    and working order plus maintain the records required in the laboratory procedures.
    • Participate in preparation and conduction of customer or regulatory agency audits.
    • Perform tasks and publish results in support of:

    o Day-to-day plant operation per the sampling/testing schedule.

    o Technical and marketing programs per lab requests in new product and process development.
    o Product quality assurance and certification per published specifications and procedures for

    standard product and individual customer requirements.

    • Provide quality certificates for shipments as required.
    • Perform special tests as required for raw materials and disposition of returned products as requested

    by marketing or customer service.

    • Maintain operator test facilities and supplies and assist in operator training as necessary to assure
    accurate, reproducible in-process test results.
    • In conjunction with other lab personnel, order chemicals and prepare standard solutions as necessary
    to meet the lab’s needs.
    • Collect and ship samples in response to request from customer service.
    • Participate as requested or as needs arise in troubleshooting, incident investigation, safety committees

    and other plant activities.

    • Perform any other duties that arise in the daily activities of operating the plant in a safe, predictable
    and reproducible manner as necessary to continually improve the plant’s performance and company’s

    competitive position.

    • Maintain and update quality information system.
    • Supports and participates in the organization’s Continual Improvement Program to comply with ISO

    9001 and cGMP requirements by adhering to processes and procedures and working toward

    achievement of company objectives.

    2.1 EDUCATION

    • Bachelors Science in Chemistry or closely related 4 year technical degree
    • Training in general laboratory practices that are recognized as acceptable best practices by the

    industry. This includes but is not limited to sampling technique, personal protective equipment,

    industrial hygiene, instrument/test calibration, use of standard samples, sample preparation and

    sample disposal.

    2.2 EXPERIENCE

    • Two (2) years of laboratory technician experience
    • Training and/or experience with individual tests and test equipment performed or used in the Gaylord

    laboratory will be required as a condition of employment. Analytical equipment includes HPLC, GC,

    GC/MS, ICP, Karl Fisher, UV/VIS, specific gravity and other standard laboratory tests.

    2.3 SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Thorough understanding of related industries specifically chemicals.
    • Strong computer skills in spreadsheet, word-processing, and financial base software.
    • Excellent team skills and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to identify problems or potential problems and develop and implements solutions.
    • Squatting, sitting, bending, pushing, walking 8-10 hours per day.
    • Able to lift 25lbs
    • Daily exposure to production environment.
