  • Provide services as a Chemist in support of the overall functions of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The contractor must be able to work independently and be well trained in multistep organic synthesis with the ability to synthesize, purify, identify, characterize and analyze compounds using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry. The contractor will keep accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments according to established procedures and ensure that these records and raw data are retained properly. They will draft technical reports, manuscripts and patent applications and will present work internally and to external consultants and collaborators as needed. The understanding of and previous experience or exposure to Structure-Activity Relationship studies and DMPK property optimization is desirable.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Synthesize and optimize chemical probes for potency and solubility. 1
    • Utilize and operate various complex laboratory equipment
    • Produce research reports and communicate results.
    • Perform chemical synthesis and optimization of small molecule probes for use in biological research.
    • Develop and produce chemical probes with linkers for conjugation to fluorescent reporters and other reporter groups. 5
    • Perform both routine and specialized laboratory procedures. 4
    • Maintain personal inventory of chemicals.
    • Devise synthetic routes to target molecules; produce desired compound libraries for pro jects assigned with acceptable purity and deliver quantities to support biological assays
    • Work with other departments to ensure timely completion of research projects. 2
    • Participate within a team to publish and present relevant projects within the community of bioorganic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry and pharmacology. 3
    • Run Validation - Ad-Hoc
    • Meet with lab members to present updates - Ad-Hoc
    • Work products and documents related to designing, synthesizing and optimizing chemical probes for potency and solubility; devise synthetic routes to target molecules; produce desired chemical libraries - Ad-Hoc
    • Work products and documents related to producing research reports; conduct and write literature reviews; search chemical databases for journal articles, patents and related technologies; publish and present relevant projects - Ad-Hoc
    • Work products and documents related to carrying out scale-up of the chemical probes’ develop and produce chemical probers with linkers for conjugation to fluorescent re- porters and other reporter group - Ad-Hoc

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related areas.
    • Skilled in Outlook.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
    • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
