Job Function:  The R&D Chemist assists in the development of innovative personal care products to ensure that they meet set performance criteria and collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring these products to the market.  The R&D Chemist will also help in the identification of new ingredients and technologies that can be incorporated in to existing and new formulations. The chemist will provide technical support for the business development department. This role requires a strong practical background in chemistry, and the ability to apply chemical knowledge to solve problems. The R&D Chemist position requires excellent people skills to interact with Bradford internal and external customers, manufacturing sites, and the business development team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Search and identify new ingredients and technologies to incorporate into new innovative products.
• Formulate new cleansing and personal care products as directed by R&D Director.
• Review and approve stability testing reports for current and new products.
• Assist in the sourcing of new R&D materials as needed.
• Setup and direct specialized outside analytical and clinical lab testing for technical investigations.
• Develop and provide technical specifications for Bradford raw materials, cleansing base and finished products.
• Collaborate with Bradford’s process engineering, production and quality groups to establish and update specifications and process instructions. 

• As part of the development team, participate in the formula and process transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
• Assist in the management and responses to customer technical information requests. 
• Assist in the management the technical documents for the R&D department.
• Assist in R&D technical investigations.
• Search and design new analytical testing procedures where needed.
• Capable of maintaining detailed records in the lab notebook and formulation  software.
• Help to maintain the skin care additive library and collect updated information on raw materials.
• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by Bradford management.

Application Laboratory

• Assist application Lab personnel with technical issues.
• Co-ordinate and assist in the base making for new and existing bases made in the application lab.
• Co-ordinate and assist in the batching of new and existing products made in the application lab. Manage the first stage of scale-up from the R&D Concept lab to the Applications lab.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. A Bachelors’ degree in chemistry or related field and 0-2  yrs in the cosmetics, Oleo or cosmetic raw materials industry.
2. The ideal person must have some experience in formulation, compounding and processing techniques including color matching and raw material selection.  The person should be able to demonstrate good problem solving ability, managerial skills, and be able to communicate written and orally with colleagues and customers.
3. Proficient in computer based programs (Excel, Word, and Power Point) and specialized software (Oracle, SAP etc) based data entry.
4. Excellent communication skills
5. A good understanding of wet and instrumental analytical techniques.
6. Ability to manage several projects and workloads in a fast paced environment
