The Biological and Chemical Technologies Group addresses significant current and emerging national security challenges using advanced biological and chemical technologies. Capabilities within the Group include molecular, cellular, and synthetic biology; microbiome engineering; rapid DNA sequencing; bioinformatics; microfluidics; mass spectrometry; laser spectroscopy; and organic chemistry. These capabilities are applied to missions spanning chemical, biological, and explosives (CBE) detection and attribution; medical diagnostics and countermeasures; pathogen identification; point-of-care diagnostics; molecular intelligence; biosecurity; biomanufacturing, DNA forensics, and additive manufacturing.
The Biological and Chemical Technologies Group seeks a candidate to join a multidisciplinary team that is focused on developing new means to synthesize, collect, analyze, process, and/or identify chemical materials. The specific projects include mobile sensors for security and environmental applications, trace detection of threat chemicals, and the synthesis of new and unusual materials. These projects involve bench synthetic and analysis efforts, field work collecting data in real-world operational environments and interacting with end-user and collaborator organizations. We welcome anyone interested in this work to apply to become an impactful member of our team.
B.A., B.S., or M.S. in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent with experience in the synthesis and characterization of organic and/or inorganic materials. Requirements include familiarity with common methods of chemical analysis (i.e., NMR, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, gas/liquid chromatography, etc.) and direct experience in at least one of them. Additionally, the ideal candidate would have excellent written and oral communication skills.
