Chemical Dependency Counselor runs individual, family, and group counseling for patients in chemical dependency programs. Acts as mediator between patients, relatives, medical staff, and outside agencies if needed. Being a Chemical Dependency Counselor tracks patient progress and dispensation of treatment services. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent; meets the standards for Chemical Dependency Counselor Certification Board, or other appropriate certification. Additionally, Chemical Dependency Counselor typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Chemical Dependency Counselor's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.   • SUMMARY:

    The Chemical Dependency Counselor provides information, intervention, prevention and counseling services to individuals and families of the Prairie Island Indian Community and the native population in the surrounding service area.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

    The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

    • Provide assessment consultations with individuals as requested
    • Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions with individual community members
    • Facilitate family and group counseling sessions with community members
    • Attend multidisciplinary (intra-agency) meetings (Family Services, Family Health, PI clinic, chemical dependency, Tribal Court , and/or other outside treatment providers ) and provides input into action plans for individuals and/or families
    • Network with area service providers and agencies to identify and develop specific treatment plans for clients
    • Ability to navigate insurance and other payment methods
    • Perform home visits with clients as follow-up aftercare
    • Prepare written documentation and progress reports on each client/family served and maintain confidential files on each
    • Ability to transport clients in a company vehicle
    • Prepare written reports as requested to funding agencies and for the Tribal Council
    • Conduct crisis interventions with individuals and families
    • Establish support groups as needed and locate facilitator for each
    • Discuss and coordinate treatment plans with departmental members to assure the provision of the best possible service to each client
    • Assist in facilitating the monthly Sobriety Feast
    • Ability to critically think and analyze a situation, problem, and/or dilemma from a multi-dimensional, multi-faceted, and multi-concept approach
    • Ability to formulate and assist the client in their personalized Safety Plan, Case Plan, and/or Treatment Plan
    • Ability to adapt to the clients individualized needs
    • Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required

    • Active state licensed LADC
    • Associate degree in social or human services field
    • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in Chemical Dependency or related field
    • Experience interviewing and gathering data and information
    • Experience in verbal de-escalation skills
    • Must have the ability to use appropriate boundaries, self-regulation, and coping skills
    • Must have the ability to think critically, locally, and empathetically with clients and staff
    • Commitment to a healthy way of life
    • The ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends
    • Ability to pass a health examination
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality for all participants and their families
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
    • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
    • Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure
    • Sensitive to Native American Culture
    • Must pass drug screen (UA) and a federal criminal background check in compliance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act and the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act
    • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability

    Preferred

    • Experience working within a Native American Community

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*

    • Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
    • Must be able to sit for long periods of time with occasional amounts of standing or walking

     

    REQUIRED TRAINING:

    • Effectively Handling Harassment training
    • Any position-related training as determined by department manager

     

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    • Work is performed primarily in an office setting, but may include occasional outdoor activities
