Charge Nurse plans, directs, and evaluates the overall nursing care and functions in a particular nursing unit or during an assigned shift. Coordinates the activities of the unit and directs, organizes, and assigns work to the nursing staff. Being a Charge Nurse assesses, monitors, and educates the nursing staff on patient care. Institutes emergency procedures as necessary. Additionally, Charge Nurse requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Charge Nurse supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a Charge Nurse typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.   • Oversees the nursing care operations for all patients of a particular unit during assigned shifts. Provides guidance to nursing staff and oversees patient admissions and discharges. Provides continuing healthcare and education to patients and families to help them achieve their optimal level of health.

    Schedule: 4x10 shifts/Days TBD

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
    • Prepares daily schedules for the staff, delegates nursing assignments, coordinates patient flow of admissions/discharges and ensures beds are available. Leads development and implementation of unit plan when expected demand exceeds expected capacity. Assures patient care assignments are made according to established criteria, policy, and procedure.
    • Provides supervision to the nurses regarding the specific care to be administered to the patients. Works together with other nurses in order to decide an optimal care plan, specific to the needs of the individual patients.
    • Ensures all the processes and procedures that are being followed in the respective units are under the set protocols. Promotes the efficiency of the respective unit and makes contributions to the development of different procedures adopted during the care and treatment of patients.
    • Promotes coordination between the different working members and monitors activities taking place within the unit.
    • Assures positive customer relations are maintained with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital personnel across the organization.
    • Initiates action to prevent, minimize, and/or correct risk(s) to the patient, family, or hospital employee. Manages patient care situations and/or environment to assure that involving risks are addressed appropriately.
    • Assures appropriate utilization of supplies/equipment, human resources, and budget. (staffing, overtime, supply utilization issues, etc.).
    • Assures appropriate information management and documentation using the nursing process in accordance with hospital policy; gives reports to other members of the health care team.
    • Mentors, coaches and conducts role modeling (including positive team leadership) with nurses and other patient care staff.
    • Assesses the performance of nursing staff and offers guidance when needed. Participates in the performance based evaluation process by providing feedback to leadership.
    • Provides daily patient care services. Recognizes changes in patients' condition and responds appropriately by informing physicians of any changes in patients' progress, condition or medicinal needs.
    • Assists with the recruiting of new staff members. Conducts orientation and training to the newly recruited staff in collaboration with the nurse educator. Provides for timely orientation and mentoring of new employees for specialty area.
    • Maintains "The Joint Commission" standards on an ongoing basis and assists in unit responsibilities for readiness for Joint Commission visits.
    • Serves on hospital or system committees as assigned; maintains two-way communication between unit staff and assigned committee.
    • Serves as a resource for staff and physicians for day-to-day issues.
    • Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    • Ability to perform a multi-tasked role as a leader, an educator and organizer.
    • Ability to demonstrate clinical competence in providing patient and family education as well as assisting the physician in the delivery of care.
    • Ability to apply knowledge of all ages and developmental levels to care given.
    • Ability to communicate concisely with patients, families and staff; collaborate with other members of the health care team to enhance care.
    • Ability to make assessments and problem solve.
    • Ability to complete and review patient documentation in a thorough and concise manner, in whatever mode is necessary.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions.
    • Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergencies and stressful situations.
    • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities.
    • Ability to utilize a variety of computer programs to manage work; familiarity with Windows and Office programs.
    • Working knowledge of using a personal computer and electronic medical records.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Registered nurse who is a graduate of an accredited school with a current state license required.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a hospital setting required.
    • CPR certified required.
    • ACLS and PALS certified within 6 months of employment required.
    • Prior working knowledge of using a personal computer and electronic medical records.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory nursing experience preferred.
    • Pediatric experience preferred.
