    Compensation Overview

    The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

    What Is the Opportunity?

    BI Tech's Data and Analytics Value Stream is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Data Engineering to help accelerate our growth and transformation of our Technology Data and Analytics landscape. You will leverage your leadership skills and data engineering experience to strategically plan, influence, and execute design, development and implementation of complex business problems and establish best practices and standards. This role will dual report into the BI Tech Value Stream Technology leader and the BI Technology Engineering Chapter leader. You will oversee the best practices, standards and reusable components as it relates to ingesting data from multiple sources and relay information and actionable insights to relevant partners to accelerate growth and transformation of our analytics landscape. Leveraging your extensive technical and business expertise, you will be recognized as a thought leader internally and externally. In this role, you will mentor and lead teams designing and building data solutions that capture, explore, transform and utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and business intelligence/insights.

    What Will You Do?

    • Recommend data strategies to support various consumption patterns, including enterprise architectures, platforms and application infrastructure.
    • Oversee the operationalizing and automating of all capabilities to ensure secure, supported and scalable solutions.
    • Present recommendations to senior management and executives and influences decisions at the executive level.
    • Guide and coach senior team members and managers to accelerate career development.
    • Participate in, contribute to and/or lead Engineering Chapter Initiatives, Events and Outcomes
    • Identify, expand and manage Engineering Best Practices and Engineering Skills Development
    • Mentor/Train Engineers within the BI and the Value Stream on EDRs, Engineering Best Practices, Design Standards, Modern Engineering Practices, Cloud-First Approach, Well-Architected Cloud Solutions, Events and APIs as appropriate
    • Be the steward of Engineering Culture within the Value Stream & across BI
    • Co-creates and operationalize the BI Engineering Strategy that ensures continuous improvements in engineering excellence and experience in alignment with the Value Stream Engineering Strategy
    • Identify, expand and manage inner sourced projects and processes in partnership with the Value Streams and SWE Chapter
    • Partner with and influence BI & VS Architecture and Other LOB/Enterprise Partners to drive realization of Target State, design and document solutions and ensure alignment with accepted Architecture Guidelines
    • Lead and Contribute to Major Value Stream Initiatives by working with the circles/teams to build new and modernize applications that reduces technical debt, enables business outcomes, and/or reduce maintenance costs.
    • Ensure that Value Stream solutions achieves key NFRs including Reusability; Maintainability; Securability; Testability; Readability; Scalability; Cloud Financial Responsibility; Observability/Traceability; Accessibility; Recoverability
    • Leads the Value Stream Engineering Council and actively participates in the BI Tech Council
    • Foster a psychologically safe team environment
    • May lead a team of Software Engineers; providing technical guidance and mentorship while modeling Travelers' leadership behaviors to foster a team environment.
    • Partner with businesses to establish strategic direction, develop product roadmaps, provide technical oversight for large programs, and implement optimal solutions to meet business needs.
    • Build collaborative relationships with key leaders and peers across the organization to ensure the best use of overall resources.
    • Provide unique opportunities and challenges to enrich development of team members, assess skill gaps, develop mitigation efforts, and equip individuals with skills, tools, and standard approaches to improve the overall quality of engineering practices and skill sets.
    • Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions for data engineering problems.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

    • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent
    • Twelve or more years of related work experience
    • Six or more years of team leadership experience
    • Industry level expertise of capabilities and direction of technology coupled with an in-depth knowledge of the technology required and the needs of business environments necessary to lead assigned teams.
    • Demonstrated experience implementing current technology trends and techniques (e.g., cloud-based solutions leveraging microservices)
    • Interprets internal/ external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve SDLC processes
    • Excellent delivery skills with the ability to examine and assess the effectiveness of software and data design strategies and methodologies, devise, apply, and share ways to ensure the quality of complex computer and data systems, incorporate awareness and understanding of work happening outside of the team, and develop widely used technical metrics that enable engineers to better understand and deliver their work.
    • Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to consult on business priorities and optimize value by identifying business aligned solutions and improve company capabilities by thoughtfully introducing concepts and technologies from the industry.
    • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to oversee and contribute to architecture that is particularly robust against single points of failure and turn future areas of need into action.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document effectively, and collaborate across disparate groups.
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage with other leaders and networks to solve problems as well as work to improve the entire engineering organization by sharing knowledge while creating opportunities for others to develop skills.

    What is a Must Have?

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training with data tools, techniques, and manipulation.
    • Seven years of data engineering or equivalent experience
    • Two years of previous management experience.
