As the Director of Product Innovation at Smithfield Foods you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our product offerings across our branded and private label portfolio. You will lead a dynamic team of innovators and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to drive the development and commercialization of new fresh and processed pork products that meet the evolving needs and preferences of consumers. The Director of Product Innovation is expected to be experienced in product development, process improvement, specifications, sensory science, and regulatory activities related to product labeling and nutritional compliance. Core Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Develop and execute the product innovation strategy aligned with the company's overall goals and market trends. Drive innovation initiatives that differentiate Smithfield Foods in the marketplace. New Product Development Lead the ideation, conceptualization, and development of innovative pork products from inception to launch. Utilize consumer insights, market research, and industry trends to identify new product opportunities. Plan and direct product innovation resources to support product development assignments related to product design, ingredient research, formulating, product specifications, product testing, regulatory labeling compliance, and successful transfer to manufacturing operations. Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate closely with R&D, marketing, business management, operations, and sales teams to ensure seamless execution of product development projects. Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation across departments. Quality and Compliance Ensure that all new product innovations meet rigorous quality standards and regulatory requirements. Work closely with quality assurance and regulatory affairs teams to maintain compliance throughout the development process. Market Analysis Conduct competitive analysis and market research to identify emerging trends, consumer preferences, and competitive threats. Use insights to inform product development strategies and maintain a competitive edge in the market. Project Management Manage multiple product innovation projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and according to quality standards. Track progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies as needed. Team Leadership Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the product innovation team. Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Innovation Leadership Professionally represents Smithfield Foods at industry functions and conferences. Provide technical advice to Senior Management on advances and developments within the scientific community that may be of benefit to the company. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Food/Meat/Biological/Animal Science/Ag Business or a related field, and with 10 years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, required. 5 years of demonstrated experience in team development and management, required. Master’s, PhD in Food /Meat Science, or MBA is preferred. Food Production and Processing knowledge of raw materials (techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting plant and animal products), production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacturing and distribution of goods (including storage/handling techniques). Comprehensive experience with USDA Rules and Regulations. Understanding of syndicated consumer data and basic knowledge of consumer-driven design. Must be able to identify consumer insights and translate them into finished products. Creative and passionate about ideation and new product development. Ability to influence and persuade others collaboratively Excellent planning and organizational skills—ability to multi-task. Ability to clearly communicate ideas, both verbally and in writing in a fashion appropriate to various levels of the organization and audiences. Strong analytical skills as well as ability to be a creative and conceptual thinker. Strong problem solver and solutions-orientated Ability to use good judgment and good decision-making skills. Ability to lead and motivate staff while maintaining an environment conducive to creativity. Experience managing a group of technical staff. Ability to uphold regulatory, company, and customer standards. May be required to travel up to 40%. Ability to represent the company at conferences and product presentations. Possess integrity and the desire to produce quality work. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including but not limited to; Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, statistical analysis and ERP (SAP) software, government and other agency regulations & databases.
