Staff Midwife
  • The Natural BirthHouse
  • Lafayette, LA FULL_TIME,PART_TIME
  • Company: The Natural BirthHouse

    Location: Lafayette, Louisiana

    About Us:
The Natural BirthHouse is a nationally accredited and state licensed freestanding birth center located in Lafayette, Louisiana. Established in 2016, we are committed to providing joyful, peaceful, and safe birth experiences to pregnant women in Acadiana. Our practice operates under a beautifully blended team of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), working seamlessly with collaborating physicians to improve maternal outcomes in an area plagued by high maternal mortality and morbidity rates.

    Position Overview:
We are seeking 1-2 passionate and dedicated midwives to join our growing birth center practice and are able to commit to the on-call lifestyle in a team-setting with decent flexibility. Both Full-Time and Part-Time positions are available. As part of our team, midwives will work in teams of two and will alternate appointments with assigned clients, requiring approximately 2-3 days per week of clinic duties (about 20 hours). Additionally, midwives will share agreed upon on-call responsibilities for deliveries based on their full-time or part-time status.

Thanks to our model which includes on-going skills development, in-services and teamwork, all midwives (CPMs or CNMs) with or without experience or background in this type of setting may apply.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conducting prenatal appointments with a personalized approach, lasting 45-60 minutes each.
    • Providing evidence-supported care including lab work, ultrasounds, and in-house non-stress tests (NSTs), while also utilizing traditional midwifery techniques such as Leopold’s Maneuvers and fundal height measurements.
    • Offering holistic maternity care services including nutrition counseling, emotional support, professional referrals, and herbal remedies when appropriate.
    • Participating in team meetings to ensure well-rounded care for each client throughout their pregnancy journey.
    • Conducting Day 1 home visits postpartum and offering ongoing breastfeeding support.

    Requirements:

    • Current certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) or a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). New midwives are welcome to apply.
    • Experience in out-of-hospital birth settings preferred, but not required.
    • Commitment to a high-touch/low-tech approach to maternity care, shared decision making and commitment to providing informed consent and family-centered care.
    • Ability to work collaboratively within a blended team of CPMs and CNMs.
    • Residence within 30 minutes of the birth center while on call.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
    • Personal cell phone, available vehicle with drivers license and on-demand child-care for on-call times.

    Payment Structure and Estimated Pay:

This position offers a modest base salary supporting the midwives for their commitment to clinic duties and associated responsibilities. The majority of the financial compensation for this position comes in the form of commission, based on a per-birth model. Midwives will rotate on-call time based on their full-time/part-time status within a shared practice designed for professional sustainability and a healthy work/life balance.

Our current team of two midwives share an average of 6-12 births per month and have clients on a waiting list as early as their second trimester. In an effort to maintain sustainability of the midwives and personalized care to the clients, The Natural BirthHouse practice does not allow of a commitment of more than 14 registered clients per month per midwifery team.

It should be considered that each month’s income may vary based on the number of births attended during that calendar month. Considering we DO NOT perform medical inductions, the following is the most accurate estimates:

The *part time* position averages around $72-100k for an estimated 3-4 births per month

The *full time position* may provide between $90,000 - $140,000 for up to 8 births per month.

    Benefits:

    • Flexible scheduling to accommodate personal commitments.
    • Family-friendly work environment.
    • Skills in-services provided every 5 weeks.
    • Malpractice insurance coverage provided.
    • Clinical Director actively involved in practice to provide immediate support for questions or concerns with midwifery-based decision making 24/7.
    • Supportive office staff to manage administrative tasks. (Be a midwife and then go home! Our staff will handle the rest!)
    • Opportunity for continuous learning and professional growth.
    • Paid time-off covered by salary.
