Certified Nurse Midwife provides professional care for patients with obstetric and gynecologic needs. Assists patients in labor and delivery, as well as postpartum care. Being a Certified Nurse Midwife ensures safety and health of mother and child and identifies need for additional care. Works in conjunction with a practicing physician. Additionally, Certified Nurse Midwife requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Certified as Nurse Midwife. Requires Registered Nurse. Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Certified Nurse Midwife's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.       SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

       

      • Administers direct nurse-midwifery services (prenatal, intrapartum and gynecological services) and primary care to patients.
      • Identifies the physical, social, and emotional health needs of women and families through systematic assessment, utilization of professional skills, health history, physical evaluations, and laboratory and other diagnostic tools.
      • Uses skills to educate and counsel women and families before conception, during pregnancy, and postpartum in order to provide care, treatment, and support to patients and families as well as assess emotional adjustment to parenthood
      • Utilizes appropriate or specialized knowledge and skills in the provision of direct patient care and evaluates the effectiveness of care provided.
      • Participates in staff development programs including orientation, in-service, continuing education for nursing and other agency personnel.
      • Teaches and counsels individuals, families, and groups on the maintenance of health, prevention of disease and disability; participates in professional and community activities on matters related to health.
      • Maintains records and reports according to agency standards.
      • Prescribes and dispenses nonscheduled legend drugs as described in a written practice agreement with a BSHC licensed physician.
      • Makes appropriate referrals.
      • Provides continuity of care for clients receiving service from more than one agency by planning, coordinating, and exchanging information.
      • Other duties as assigned.

       

      REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

       

      • Masters degree in nursing with clinical specialty area in nursing practice from an accredited program with one (1) year work experience as a registered nurse and completion of a program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation.
      • Or a bachelors of science in Nursing from a school approved by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission with two (2) years work experience as a registered nurse and completion of a program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation.
      • Or an associates degree or diploma from a school of professional nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission with three (3) years work experience as a registered nurse, including one year in community health and completion of a program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation.
      • Current license to practice as a Certified Nurse-Midwife in Kentucky or have a Temporary Authorization to practice under the Kentucky Board of Nursing protocol.
      • Certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
      • Knowledge of nurse-midwifery theory, procedure, and standards.
      • Knowledge of trends and literature in field of gynecological and maternity care.
      • Ability to develop and implement plans of care, provide skilled nurse-midwifery services, interpret and explain medical records, reports, and medical instructions.
