    Organizational Unit Overview
    The School of Art and Design provides a multidisciplinary approach to art and design that offers opportunities for students to develop their creative and critical thinking abilities by thinking through making. The school currently enrolls more than 500 students in twelve areas across four degrees. The School of Art and Design is the most comprehensive BFA art program in the University of North Carolina system and has been continuously accredited by NASAD since 1962. The school has over 40 full-time faculty and is located in the Jenkins Fine Arts Center, a 142,000 square-foot facility with specialized equipment, tools, and technology for the School of Art and Design's 14 disciplines-animation/ interactive design, art education, art history, ceramics, film and video production, glass, graphic design, illustration, metal design, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textile design. From computer labs, digital looms, CNC router, and laser cutters to a woodshop, foundry, letterpress shop, black and white darkroom, and beyond, the school's facilities are comprehensive and available to faculty and students who think, make, and work across the school's disciplines.

    Job Duties
    The School of Art and Design at East Carolina University seeks a nine-month, fixed term Teaching Assistant Professor in Ceramics. The ceramics area supports student development of skills, knowledge, and personal direction necessary for professional artists. The curriculum addresses the importance of technical skills gained through rigorous ideation and critique. Facilities and studios accommodate all aspects of ceramics processes and maximize the benefits of community-based learning. The curriculum teaches a broad array of techniques including: hand building, wheel throwing, mold making and casting, kiln design and construction, clay and glaze chemistry, individual research, and exhibition.

    The position will teach 4 courses a year (2 per semester) and serve as technical support for the ceramics area for 20 hours per week assisting with facilities maintenance of: electric kilns, gas kilns, clay making equipment, wheels, the plaster area, the Dwight M. Holland Ceramics Collections room, a log splitter and chainsaws, the wood collection trailer, a brick saw, and other various tools. The position will also assist with loading and firing student work in gas and electric kilns, firing the wood kiln, maintaining inventory and oversee clay/glaze materials ordering, and managing studio clean-up throughout the semester.

    This position will also assist with:
    • Advising the student group, the Ceramics Guild.
    • Supporting guild fundraising and sales.
    • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Participating in community engagement to enhance the ceramic program.
    • Raising awareness of ceramics to the Greenville and North Carolina community.
    • Assisting with recruiting and ECU ceramics visibility.
    • Collaborating with area faculty on curriculum development and service to the school and profession.
    • Additional responsibilities as needed.
    Minimum Education/Experience
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • MFA or related terminal degree in ceramics or related field required.
    • Ability to teach ceramics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
    • Ability to contribute to curriculum development.
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
    • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
