  • Job Summary:

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison Art Department is a multidisciplinary department focused on maintaining its high standards of excellence and ability to provide exceptional access to a myriad of labs and shops for its undergraduate and graduate student researchers. We are currently seeking qualified applicants for new full-time Instructional Technician positions to assist with instruction and operations within the department. These positions work closely with departmental research faculty that lead disciplined areas of study in leading demonstrations and providing technical instruction during classes. These Instructional Technicians will work closely with Art Department research faculty that lead disciplined areas of study to provide technical instruction and demonstrations during classes. These positions also work closely with students as it relates to Lab/shop monitoring during open Lab/shop hours. The Instructional Technologist aids students in the development of their projects and promotes safe shop practices. Instructional Technicians work with the department office in identifying the needs of shops and labs. This position is at the front line of equipment diagnostics and maintenance and works with our office administrator to make purchases and schedule maintenance for labs/shops throughout the academic year and summer session. These positions will work with existing Instructional Technicians and our Facilities Manager to ensure the safety of daily operations in the department and will be a part of our department's Safety Committee.

    A successful candidate must be highly organized, and willing to learn new skills and technologies as they become relevant. The candidate must also have the ability to order supplies, reconcile ledgers, and track expenses, research equipment, and expendable supplies. A successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to lead with flexibility, empathy, sensitivity, and tact in dealing with diverse groups of people is required. Must have the ability to work both independently and in a team environment This position will need to be able to assess timelines and workload. A strong commitment to health and safety issues in the arts is required.

    Responsibilities: Assists with or supports the design, development, and enhancement of instructional activities, programs, and curricula. Utilizes effective educational methodologies and technologies to meet organizational and learner needs.
    • 5% Completes initial edits, reviews, and updates of existing instructional materials
    • 15% Contributes to researching, designing, and/or acquiring learning resources, technologies, materials, and/or processes to support learning
    • 15% Assists with providing basic training and technical support to learners in settings such as classrooms, labs, clinics, and distance learning mediums
    • 15% Provides consultation, training, and/or support for learning technology tools and platforms
    • 20% Analyzes, tests, troubleshoots, resolves issues, and provides feedback regarding learning technologies
    • 5% Provides support for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and disseminating data to identify instructional program needs and enhance effectiveness
    • 5% Assists with the design and development of multimedia learning materials
    • 15% Responsibilities include operation and repair of equipment essential to the Ceramics area.
    • 5% Safety Training, Upkeep, and Protocol Enforcement specific to area studios and labs for students, faculty, and staff.
    Tasks:
    • Kiln firing and kiln operation
    • Ceramics area material storage and area upkeep
    • Inventory, ordering and stocking of ceramics materials
    • Mixing of clay and other ceramics materials
    • Kiln loading and unloading
    • Ability to trouble shoot and repair ceramics equipment
    • Assist with ceramics student projects

    Qualifications:

    Qualifications:
    - Extensive training and/or experience in facilities maintenance, machinery, and equipment management in the following area: Ceramics
    - Additional training and experience is desired and favorable in the following areas: Printmaking, Book Art and Papermaking, Glass, Art Metals, Photography, Digital Fabrication/IT, Sculpture, and Wood.
    - Six months of related technical shop supervisory experience.
    - Experience with relevant equipment, tools, and processes, with the ability to instruct students on the correct and proper use of equipment.

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities integral to success in this position:
    - Demonstrated ability to oversee skilled and unskilled persons using hand and power equipment in a studio art setting.
    - Able to oversee the work activities of assigned laboratory student employees, as well as assuring the proper training and procedures for the laboratory to maintain the health and safety of all students and personnel.
    - Flexibility in moving between tasks using good time-management skills
    - Possess clear verbal and written communication skills
    - Apply basic mechanical aptitude principles.
    - Must have a working knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
    - Candidates must be flexible to help cover for other team members as needed

    It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
