  • Job Summary:

    The Cardiac Device Specialist is a member of the Heart Rhythm/Device Department working under the direct supervision of the Team Lead and Department Manager. They are primarily responsible for performing device interrogations, programming of Pacemakers, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators, Loop Recorders, and home monitor equipment.

    Responsible for above procedures and processing patient data with clinical judgment using a variety of information systems while facilitating clear patient education regarding their cardiac care, medications, disease process/prevention, risk factors, and cardiac procedures.

    This position is responsible for recognizing and responding immediately and appropriately to potential emergency situations that arise, and making clinical decisions in regard to heart rhythms, safety, contraindications to testing, and test termination under physician protocol. Other functions may include escorting rooming patients, and providing care as directed by a provider. Travel to other locations may be required.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Preparation of patient for device interrogation, including patient interviews, obtaining medical history, obtaining patient consent and signatures, and conducting patient teaching related to procedure including risks and complications under physician protocol.

    Ability to perform a full spectrum of Cardiac Device interrogations and/or programming for pacemakers, ICDs, loop recorders, and home monitor equipment which includes battery and device parameter assessment, lead function assessment, and arrhythmia assessment under physician protocol.

    Provides evaluation and device management to patients under the supervision of the device nurses and providers.

    Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular diseases and cardiac medications.

    Accurately document clinical history and summary of test procedure in electronic medical record. Data will be summarized and reported to include pertinent patient information to assist the reading physician in clinical decision making.

    Ability to read and interpret complex rhythm strips.

    Knowledge and ability to operate, and/or troubleshoot interrogated device information and various industry programmers and software.

    Knowledge of device patient management software to enter patient data and provide reports for the providers and patient medical record.

    Ability to recognize and respond immediately and appropriately to potential emergency situations that arise.

    Assist to organize the workflow of each day in conjunction with Team Lead.

    Instruct patients in the function of pacemakers, ICD’s, Loop Recorders, and home monitoring equipment.

    Answers related questions using critical thinking and physician protocols to provide the best patient outcomes.

    Maintain Device Patient Tracking System with follow-up scheduling through the electronic medical record to ensure patient safety per clinic protocol.

    Ensures correct billing, bill dropping, and coding of device checks. Provide specific education related to heart failure, atrial or ventricular arrhythmias, device implant procedures or ablations when appropriate.

    Reinforce physician’s care plan with patients and family as needed.

    Coordinates multiple clients needs in collaboration with the client’s healthcare provider and cardiologists and sub-specialists. Job Description

    Performs regular inspection of all programming equipment to ensure proper function and maintenance before beginning procedures. Follows up with appropriate personnel for equipment needs and repairs when appropriate.

    Orients and trains new staff and/or students. Other duties as assigned.

    Job Qualifications: Highly experienced Device Technician, Monitor/Telemetry, Electrophysiology or Cardiovascular Technologist or other job-related experience requiring extensive cardiac device knowledge is required. This role is for someone who demonstrates strong cardiac rhythm recognition skills and has excellent written and verbal skills to communicate with peers and physicians alike. Must have the ability to perform device interrogations, programming of Pacemakers, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators, Loop Recorders, and home monitor equipment.

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    Education/Experience: Successfully completed a formal comprehensive training program to become a cardiac electrophysiology or cardiovascular technologist or ICD/Pacemaker technician that included a minimum of 6 months didactic training and exposure to the field. OR Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the field of cardiac pacing or electrophysiology with direct exposure to patient cases in the clinical or industry setting or exposure to technical cases in the industry setting. OR Have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a cardiac device tech, monitor/telemetry tech, electrophysiology tech, cardiovascular tech or other job-related experience for device monitoring. A minimum of 1-year experience in cardiac services required; 1-year cardiac device specific experience preferred. Advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation and pacemaker/ICD analysis skills required. Previous third-party industry vendor interaction is preferred.

    Certificates and Licenses: One of these certifications through the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) or through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) is required or must be able to obtain within 2 years of hire. Acceptable certifications/credentials are NASPE, CCDS, CEPS, or RCES. Current state licensure as an RN with electrophysiology training or MD training is also acceptable in lieu of the above credentials. Must have current CPR/BLS certification. ACLS in addition to CPR/BLS is preferred.

    Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations.

    Math Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurements, volume, and distance.

    Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
