Equipment Mechanic (Equipment Repairer)

  • Inspects, troubleshoots, performs routine maintenance on, and repairs for a wide variety of apparatus and small engine equipment. Performs routine preventative maintenance and determines nature and extent of minor and major repairs on motorized equipment and vehicles in the shop and in the field. Makes operational checks and adjustments on internal combustion motors, generators, transfer switches and system controls. Uses machine tools and hand tools safely in the performance of daily operations. Accurately mixes gas/oil fuel preparations as specified for various equipment. Performs minor fabrication work using metal working tools. Drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and parts/materials. Drives commercial vehicles as necessary. Operates snow removal equipment. Exercises and observes all safety policies and procedures when dealing with equipment and tools. Participates in safety trainings. Maintains stock inventory of parts supplies and materials. Keeps minor records and performs simple administrative tasks.

    DPWES provides award-winning solid waste collection services for approximately 45,000 homes, operates a transfer station and landfill, regulates solid waste services, and leads sustainability initiatives to promote zero waste goals for Fairfax County.     Note: Solid Waste operates a seven (7) day per week operation with early and late shifts, to include alternate schedules. Overtime, weekend and holiday work is required. Position is designated as "Essential Emergency Services Personnel". Shift hours may include 11:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.(The illustrative duties listed in this specification are representative of the class but are not an all- inclusive list.     • Conducts routine maintenance, finds problems and repairs a wide variety of apparatus and equipment (i.e., fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, meters, machine and hand tools, power tampers, chain saws, lawn mowers, bush cutters, concrete mixers, pumps, and augers);
    • Maintains inventory and stock of mechanical parts and equipment, and orders parts as needed;
    • Maintains records of all equipment repaired, parts inventoried, maintenance schedules and fuel mixture ratios;
    • Makes operational checks and adjustments on the internal combustion motors, generators, transfer switches and controls of the system;
    • Determines nature and extent of repairs required and performs minor and major repair work;
    • Uses machine tools and hand tools to sharpen and recondition saws (hand saws, band saws, circular saws) and other cutting tools (chisels, drill kits, knives, scissors, paper cutters, metal cutters) according to users' or manufacturers' specifications;
    • Accurately mixes gas/oil fuel preparations as specified for various equipment;
    • Performs preventive maintenance as necessary;
    • May supervise and instruct trades helpers;
    • May drive County truck to and from job sites for emergency repairs and for snow removal when necessary;
    • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
    • Reports unsafe working conditions;
    • Complies with safety competencies.

    • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, schematics, blue-prints and manufacturers' manuals;
    • Ability to estimate time and material needs, determine when repair is not economically practical, and perform routine clerical tasks and arithmetical computations;
    • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
    • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;
    • Ability to drive county vehicles;
    • Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and completion of an acceptable apprentice program in maintenance and repair work, and one year of successful journey-level experience in related maintenance and repair work.

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
    • Valid driver's license
    • DOT Medical Card
    • Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" within 12 months of hire

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Five years of successful journey level experience.
    • ASE Certification.
    • Five years of experience working with heavy equipment hydraulics.
    • Two years of experience maintaining inventory and stock using a tracking system.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance and 25 to 50 lbs. with or without assistance. Ability to operate and move vehicles and equipment. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for lengthy periods of time. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Able to reach tight spaces by crawling, reaching or stooping. Able to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Employee must have visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Manual strength and dexterity needed to work on and operate various pieces of equipment, use manual and power tools, and handling of tools and materials. Work requires performing tasks in an environment in which raw waste is present. Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents.
