Job Summary
The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for leading data science projects and initiatives, mentoring junior team members, and developing innovative and more complex solutions to address clinical and business challenges. The Senior Data Scientist role requires strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, coupled with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and guide decision-making processes based on data-driven insights. Individual job responsibilities include leading the development and implementation of complex data science solutions, designing, implementing, and evaluating advanced machine learning models and algorithms, evaluating the effectiveness of models, algorithms, and optimizing their performance. Leadership Job Responsibilities include mentoring and guiding Associate and Intermediate Data Scientists, collaborating with various business and clinical teams to align projects with organizational objectives, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making processes.
Essential Functions
- Seeks appropriate data sources and ensures data quality for projects, and identifies new data sources to improve existing projects.
- Develops advanced descriptive, inferential, and predictive models, and enhances and fine tunes existing models.
- Analyzes and interprets data sets across various domains, including exploratory data analysis (EDA), advanced statistical analyses, and predictive analytics.
- Independently creates data visualizations and uses storytelling methods to communicate model results and findings to senior department leadership.
- Actively pursues opportunities to grow their business acumen and skills from more experienced team members. Provide support and recommendations to less experienced team members to enhance their technical skills.
- Adheres to the team’s application of best practices and organizational standards of the Software Development Lifecycle and machine learning operations (MLOps) to ensure reproducibility of findings and effective model deployment.
Qualifications
Required
- Master's Degree or equivalent training in a quantitative discipline – Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field. Similar certified online education or work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis
- 5 years of relevant experience in health care, data science, statistics, or a related field. Demonstrated ability to lead projects, mentor junior team members, and develop complex data-driven solutions. Equivalent demonstrated proficiency may also be considered. Similar certified online education or work experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Experience with SQL
- Experience with a scripting language such as R, Python, Scala, or Julia
- Experience with machine learning operations (MLOps) and deploying predictive models into production
- Experience with a version control tool such as Git
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Snowflake, AWS, or Azure
- Familiarity with software development best practices, including participating in code reviews, compiling effective documentation, and using CI/CD pipelines
- Ability to develop proficiencies in new technologies quickly
- Extensive experience in advanced statistical and machine learning methods, including supervised, unsupervised, and time series ML models and natural language processing techniques.
- Skilled at creating interactive dashboards and reports to help users explore and understand results using tools like Streamlit, RShiny, Tableau, PowerBI, etc.
- Experience with a wide range of structured and unstructured data sources and extraction methods including large databases, APIs, JSON, etc.
- Sound understanding of the healthcare or insurance industry, including emerging trends and issues
- Advanced problem-solving skills and an ability to tackle complex, ambiguous problems that require creative solutions
- Strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate complex data and analysis to non-technical stakeholders, including large groups and department-level leadership
Preferred
- Experience with a data orchestration tool such as Apache Airflow
- Experience with a data build tool such as DBT
- Experience developing models in reproducible environments using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, or virtual environments (venvs)
- Experience working with large databases and handling optimization and performance issues
