    The AAOS Clinical Reviewer is primarily responsible for collecting and coordinating data related to OHSU's Orthopedic Registry program through AAOS (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons). The incumbent is the primary clinical reviewer for the AAOS Registries, which comprises five orthopedic registries: American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), Fracture & Trauma Registry, Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry, Shoulder and Elbow Registry, and the American Spine Registry (ASR). Duties include collecting concurrent and retrospective data, assuring the integrity of the data collection and data entry for data submittal and data repository, reporting clinical outcomes and descriptive data, and integrating findings into quality improvement activities. The incumbent is responsible for the accurate and timely collection and transmission of data under the guidelines established by the AAOS national registry, performing data queries of that database as requested. The Clinical Reviewer will stay proactively appraised of any definitional, specification, or reporting changes within AAOS and DNV and will actively collaborate with the registry and associated vendors. You will collaborate with the clinical teams, including the orthopedic department quality director, orthopedic section heads, spine center medical director, orthopedic vice chair/medical director, Quality Management staff, and the other clinical staff. Participates as a member of the Ortho Best Practice (quarterly), Spine Best Practice (monthly), and Ortho Department Quality meetings (monthly).

    Function/Duties of Position

    Data Collection and Abstraction:

    • Partners with ITG and registry representatives to identify patients for AAOS registry inclusion. Supports data collection and submission.
    • Navigates the electronic medical record system, Epic, to abstract concurrent and retrospective data on all patients meeting AAOS national registry guidelines. 
    • Finds, reads, and comprehends H&Ps, discharge summaries, progress notes, procedure notes, labs, medications, and outside medical records within Epic. Will order records from outside facilities to complete all the data collection fields. 
    •  Collaborates with physicians and patient care teams, including attending clinical team meetings and orthopedic subspecialty meetings to determine data needs and evaluate clinical outcomes. 
    • monitors the accuracy of data via automated and auditing means
    • Updates data collection tool as appropriate and in accordance with registry definitions, specifications, and guidelines. 
    • Enters accurate and complete data promptly using the approved software. Updates database software and data fields as necessary 
    • ensures timely data entry and submittal, integrity of data, and implementation of quality control measures to assure accuracy and validity 
    • develops and updates AAOS standard work tools 
    •  Monitors export data to AAOS registries per guidelines and in accordance with data security and integrity standards 
    • Develops efficiencies to improve data collection processes. Works collaboratively to develop strategies and ensure the timely and complete collection and entry of data 
    •  identifies issues related to documentation and works with the appropriate clinicians and informatics staff to make relevant improvements 
    •  Identifies issues potentially related to clinical practice and guideline adherence and brings those to the attention of the Quality Director, Section Head, and appropriate Medical Director.

    Data Reporting and Analysis:

    • Distributed national benchmarking reports to customers as appropriate and as requested by PI, medical directors, section head, and clinical staff.
    • Develops and provides descriptive, statistical, and comparative analyses and reports of AAOS data as requested. Analysis and reporting include narrative, tabular, and graphical documentation and presentation. 
    • works closely with physician champion, supervisor, quality management staff, and hospital and clinic staff to identify opportunities for improvement
    • Develops and reports standardized queries, reports, and dashboards quarterly and additional queries as requested. Prepares and presents comprehensive reports to appropriate committees, management, and other audiences within defined timeframes.
    • establishes effective working relationships with orthopedic Quality and Service line leadership for reliable and meaningful data interpretation and analysis
    • Coordinate data inquiries to promote research activities as requested.
    • Actively participates in accreditation visits and preparation and provides clinical outcome and performance improvement data as required. Prepares presentations/documentation and helps present during survey visits.
    • presents data to the DNV during onsite and inter-cycle visits
    • Distributes and upkeeps Orthopedic and Spine Quality Dashboard as needed.

    Patient Reported Outcomes 

    • Identify appropriate patient-reported outcome (PRO) surveys required for submission to AAOS inclusion criteria and DNV certification outcome data. 
    •  Work with vendors and/or Epic ITG team to identify patient-reported outcome data collection gaps.
    •  Monitor PRO collection data and support analysis of outcome data related to quality management projects. 
    • Develop and distribute reports to Orthopedic and Spine quality meetings regarding the collection data of PROs.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelors degree in a business field and one year of experience that included analytical, database, spreadsheet and/or financial experience, technical writing, quantitative analysis or use of statistical principles;  OR
    • Associates degree in a business field plus three years of experience that included analytical, database, spreadsheet and/or financial experience, technical writing, quantitative analysis or use of statistical principles;   OR
    • Five years of experience that included analytical, database, spreadsheet and/or financial experience, technical writing, quantitative analysis or use of statistical principles;  OR
    • An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
    • INTERMACS certification within 3 months of hire. GWTG - Heart Failure certification within 3 months of hire

    Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Proficient computer skills including the use of MS Office products, basic statistical skills, and the internet.
    • Experience with relational databases and data quality methods
    • Clinical knowledge and understanding of patient care.
    • Experience in clinical chart review and abstraction. 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Degree in healthcare related field preferred
    • Experience working with national registries or databases
    • clinical data collection experience
    • experience with the heart failure patient population
    • Quality improvement and patient safety knowledge and experience
    • Advanced statistic knowledge and experience

    Additional Details

    8 hr shifts M-F work schedule -- some variability, depending on need of position and submission timelines.

     

    Pay Range: $32.79 - $45.01 per hour
