Provides leadership and direction for tuition and fee structure, financial aid resources, billing and receivables, petty cash, and payments. Being a Bursar is the custodian of institutional funds. Ensures compliance with university, state, and federal regulations and standard accounting procedures. Additionally, Bursar requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a top executive officer. The Bursar typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller, also known as Financial Services, located on Main Campus is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University.
It is the responsibility of the Controller's Office to ensure compliance with all financial policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the University or imposed by external agencies, including state and federal audit requirements, following generally accepted accounting practices. Additionally, the Division oversees the maintenance of the official financial records of the University.
The Bursar/Cashiers office is returning to work post retirement, Daniel Borrego (former Bursar, retired effective November 1, 2023). Mr. Borrego will be rehired to fill this critical role which will benefit the University to have his institutional knowledge and expertise to complete this function. He will under indirect supervision, provide short-term professional management consulting services in the department regarding fee assessment, as well as provide advice and current processes. Mr. Borrego will work on a temporary or professional services basis in support of this project.
