Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Community Planner, incumbent performs duties involving inspection and enforcement of the New Mexico Building Code, International Building Codes, City Land Development Standards and Sign Code and other related building codes and zoning ordinances. Duties include review and interpretation of plans and specifications; relating the plans and specifications to actual construction; inspects for compliance with laws relating to building, zoning codes and city ordinances and standards. Inspects and monitors work progress of new and rehabilitative construction to ensure conformance with city ordinances and regulations; enforces ordinances and regulations consistently, tactfully and impartially. Issues building and sign permits. Makes reports and maintains records of inspection and enforcement activities. Assists the Planner, City Engineer, Fire Marshall in carrying out routine administrative and technical tasks and provides support to staff in various duties pertinent to department operation. Patrols, inspects and conducts field investigations of potential violations of City codes. Responds to complaints of potential code violations such as polluting, unauthorized building construction, substandard housing conditions, etc. Issues warnings, correction notices or citations. Prepares detailed reports of activities and investigations made. Maintains records of daily activity.

STARTING HOURLY PAY: $22.10 p/h
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent, (GED)
- Three (3) years foreman level experience in building/construction trades.
- Possession of state CID general inspector certification –OR- Must pass New Mexico CID General Inspector Exam with a 75% or better prior to hire
- Possession of national ICC certification(s) as a construction inspector in both the International Building Code and International Residential Code –OR- must pass national ICC certification exams within one year of hire with 75% or better
- Valid driver’s license. Must meet City’s insurability requirements.
- Must pass a background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited college or vocational school with an emphasis in building, planning or closely related field
- Experience related to law enforcement
OTHER CONDITIONS:
Upon offer of employment, candidate will have sixty days in which to pass the required State Construction Industries Division (CID) General Construction Inspector Exam and obtain State CID certification as a General Construction Inspector, CID certification must be secured prior
