    Job Description

    Under the supervision of the Planning and Development Director, the building inspector is a non-exempt position under FLSA responsible for the administration and enforcement of building, zoning, plumbing and electrical codes and regulations of the County. Responsibilities include examination, from a technical standpoint, of building plans before permits are issued, supervising and inspecting buildings during construction, enforcing compliance with construction standards, electrical codes, and plumbing standards, and code enforcement of County regulations.

  • • Advises Sheriff, Fire Department, and/or other agencies on matters pertaining to public safety;

  • Assists and advises homeowners, contractors, and others in interpreting codes and in removing violations;

  • Conducts onsite inspections of residential, commercial, and other structures in unincorporated areas to ensure the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical meet current adopted codes;

  • Reviews plans/drawing to determine conformance with existing codes prior to issuance of building permit;

  • Communicates with homeowners, contractors, and sub-contractors regarding corrections necessary to ensure conformity with codes and plans;

  • Documents all inspections and maintains files on all inspections completed;

  • Investigates potential building and/or zoning violations;

  • Attends continuing education courses to stay current with codes;

  • Provides code enforcement of County regulations;

  • Enforces the Architectural Barriers provisions of ADA;

  • Gives final approval to permits after applicant has complied with all provisions of various regulatory codes;

  • Interprets codes and regulations and answers inquiries regarding enforcement;

  • Provides needed information required through reports according to department procedures;

  • Supervises the inspection of private and public buildings during constriction to insure that building laws are being observed;

  • Works with advisory boards and Construction Appeals Board;

  • Works with other agencies in time of peril or disaster;

  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Building Inspector
    • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry;
    • Ability to assimilate, collect and analyze data;
    • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume;
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the public;
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form;
    • Ability to interpret and work from plans, drawings, blueprints and diagrams;
    • Ability to operate a calculator and other related equipment;
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and sketches, and the ability to read and map legal descriptions;
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals;
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public;
    • Ability to recall and apply large amounts of technical data and legal regulations;
    • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties;
    • Ability to review, read and interpret construction details and plans, keep detailed records and prepare reports;
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists;
    • Ability to tactfully enforce codes, regulations and requirements;
    • Ability to understand and interpret oral and written instructions and manuals;
    • Knowledge of civil engineering, uniform building codes, plumbing codes, mechanical codes and electrical codes, construction materials and methods, and zoning regulations;
    • Skill in interpersonal, oral and written communication.

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, grasp, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Lifting, moving, pushing or pulling up to 10 pounds does not generally occur. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision and ability to adjust focus, ability to see and read codes and to make visual inspections. Possesses coordination adequate to write, draw, use hand tools.


    Additional Information

    Certificate, License: Valid driver's license. Building Inspector Certification (Residential, Commercial – preferred).

    Required Education and/or Experience: Three years related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D.; or Associate’s degree and one year experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position. Building inspection experience.

    Preferred Education and/or Experience: Four years related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D.; or a Bachelor’s degree from a college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Construction Science.
