Biostatistician conducts statistical studies to generate data and insights used to innovate, plan and support improved healthcare outcomes and processes. Prepares analysis plans to ensure the best statistical methods are developed and utilized. Being a Biostatistician writes specifications for files, consistency checks, tables, and calculations used to collect and analyzes data from a variety of sources. Interprets analyses and prepares exhibits for reports and presentations. Additionally, Biostatistician interfaces with non technical users to assist with data interpretation and understanding of results. Proficient with statistical computer applications like SAS and R. Typically requires a master's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Biostatistician occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.   • Position Description

    The Biostatistician leads analysis and support for scientific studies, contract deliverables, data requests, and database maintenance activities utilizing the OPTN database, research analysis datasets and other sources of data as necessary.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Leads development and design of quantitative and occasional qualitative research projects and proposals in the field of organ transplantation with varying levels of statistical rigor.
    • Expected to lead, organize and execute on interdepartmental or cross-departmental projects.
    • Directs, advises, and develops the work of other staff within projects with statistical complexity
    • Expected to perform statistical analyses of varying levels of complexity on transplant data in support of projects.
    • Responsible for managing and meeting costs, budget and timeline expectations for projects where appropriate
    • Projects include but are not limited to the following types of products
    • Government contract deliverables
    • Internal and external collaborations on research studies aligned with organizational priorities
    • Grant proposals
    • Statistical consulting collaborations
    • Other project of scientific value to the community or organization
    • Independently operates as primary interface with diverse internal and external collaborators and/or clients when developing data requests, research plans or presenting findings commensurate with experience.
    • Leads and collaborates on publications. Sometimes reviews publications for transplant or statistical journals.
    • Will present Research findings to varying audiences including medical professionals, business stakeholders, and analytic professionals.
    • Scientific curiosity is essential. Proactively stays up to date on published literature and transplantation knowledge.
    • Leads and supports department process mapping of critical tasks
    • Leads internal and external meetings. Strong meeting facilitation skills. When leading or participating in meetings, expected to be highly engaged and provide feedback and input.
    • Assigned tasks related to the onboarding of new team members.
    • Required to lead and participate in several complex projects simultaneously. Manages individual workload to meet dynamic deadlines taking into consideration priorities.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Requirements

    PhD with 5 years of behavioral science, epidemiology, public health or other related research experience (to include Graduate Assistant work) required. Also will consider a Master’s degree with 6 years of professional work experience


    Critical Skills

    • Advanced skills in R, SQL, and SAS programming is preferred.
    • Strong statistical skills including but not limited to
    • Statistical consulting with diverse internal or external clients
    • Strong technical support as it relates to the design and statistical analysis for projects
    • Proficient coder in statistical programming languages
    • Strong skills in leading and conducting statistical analysis for projects
    • Responsible for statistical oversight on projects
    • Leading the quality assurance of statistical analyses including high priority, high impact deliverables
    • Proactively stays current on statistical methodology applicable to the field of transplantation
    • Must have demonstrated ability to do independent research.
    • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.


    Additional Skills and Qualifications

    • Highly adaptive.
    • Expertise in theory and application of survival analysis, categorical data analysis, and generalized linear models.
    • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently, within teams and lead teams.
    • High attention to detail, accuracy, initiative, excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • High level of communication and partnership with team members- interdepartmental, cross-departmental and UNOS leadership.
    • Demonstrated data manipulation and data management skills is required.
    • Experience with programming or statistical analyses with RShiny, SAS, STATA, SPSS, Python or other platforms are considered.
    • Experience with data visualization software (Tableau, SAS Visual Analytics, other) is of interest.


    Education

    Advanced degree in Biostatistics, Statistics Research or other related field of study, or equivalent level of research experience required. PhD is highly desired
