  • Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area (HVWA) is a volunteer-based, community supported hospice that provides non-medical support to individuals and their families at the end of life and throughout the grieving process. HVWA serves 27 towns in central Maine.

    We are seeking a 32 hour/week Bereavement Services Coordinator. The Bereavement Services Coordinator (BSC) works closely with the Executive Director to plan and implement a diverse range of non-clinical grief support services for adults and children, including the program Hope’s Place for Grieving Children. The BSC is responsible for facilitating a welcoming and supportive process for individuals and families seeking grief support from the initial call to completion of services. The BSC is also responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising bereavement one-on-one volunteers and group facilitators. This position includes some education and outreach responsibilities.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Conducts all activities within the philosophy and mission of Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area.
    • Ensures excellent service and support for children and adults in our bereavement programs.
    • Plans and coordinates diverse, year-round bereavement programming for adults, including peer support groups, workshops, educational sessions, and an interfaith memorial service. Provides outreach and education on grief and HVWA’s bereavement services to the wider community.
    • Plans and coordinates multiple Hope’s Place sessions per year as well as special workshops and education sessions on childhood grief. Provides outreach, education and support regarding childhood grief to local school districts.
    • Responds to current community needs with additional programming and resources.
    • Recruits, trains, assigns and supervises facilitators for adult peer support groups and Hope’s Place, as well as volunteers for one-on-one grief support.
    • Assesses client suitability for bereavement services during initial meetings and through ongoing oversight. Refers to community resources as appropriate.
    • Maintains accurate and timely records according to organizational policies and best practices.
    • Regularly evaluates bereavement programs through regular communication with volunteers and clients, review of client evaluations and other measures as detailed in the organization’s Quality Assurance Plan.
    • Maintains resources on grief for adults, children and families, volunteers and the community.
    • Provides opportunities for continuing education for volunteers and helps coordinate volunteer recognition and appreciation events and activities.
    • Plans and coordinates Camp Ray of Hope with the assistance of HVWA staff and volunteers.
    • Supports the fundraising efforts of the organization as requested including attendance at our annual golf tournament.
    • Maintains a safe and respectful environment for participants and volunteers.
    • Pursues continuing education as related to providing grief support in a volunteer hospice setting.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Skills/Abilities:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Effective group management and facilitation skills.
    • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Professional and calm under pressure. Able to respond creatively to changing priorities.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
    • Valid Maine driver’s license, reliable transportation, and a willingness to travel through HVWA’s service area.
    • Successful completion of a yearly background check and driving history check.
    • Adherence to confidentiality policies.

    Education and Experience:

    • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, education or related field strongly preferred. Bachelor’s Degree required.
    • 2-5 years professional, relevant experience.
    • Completion of HVWA certified volunteer training course within six months of hire.
    • Experience or education in providing grief support.
    • Experience supervising others preferred.

    Physical Demands/Conditions/Requirements

    Work is performed in a general office environment. Some travel to client locations is required. Full range of physical mobility including manual dexterity, carrying, lifting, standing, sitting, stooping, reaching and walking is required. Light lifting (up to 15 pounds) is required.
