    Summary:

    This is a 12-month, salaried position. The Head Athletic Trainer/Assistant Director of Athletics is a member of the senior
    athletic leadership team and collaborates with the Director of Athletics, the White House Clinic and designated team
    physicians to develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medicine program to the student-athletes which
    compete on any of the intercollegiate athletic teams sponsored by Berea College. The Head Athletic Trainer/Assistant
    Director of Athletics also performs professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and
    development of the program


    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education required to ensure success in this position:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field required;
    • Master’s degree preferred.

    Experience required to ensure success in this position:
    • Minimum of three years relevant athletic training experience, preferably in a collegiate athletic setting;
    • Experience with teaching and/or supervision of students preferred.

    Special skills, knowledge and abilities:
    • Ability to meet multiple demands in a positive manner;
    • Ability to work independently but also as a positive member of a team;
    • Ability to work in a dynamic environment;
    • Ability to effectively work and communicate with individuals of varying cultures and backgrounds;
    • Ability to meet time commitments and the physical demands required of an athletic trainer in a collegiate setting;
    • Understanding and agreement with the mission and Great Commitments of Berea College;
    • Strong work ethic, passion for the profession and commitment to student-athletes;
    • Familiarity with the NCAA Division III philosophy preferred;
    • Experience with Sportsware preferred.

    License, certification, or registration necessary:
    • Must be recognized by the Board of Certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer (BOC);
    • Current licensure as an athletic trainer in the state of Kentucky;
    • CPR/AED/First Aid (professional rescuer or health care provider level);
    • Driver’s license;
    • Berea College golf cart certification;
    • Graston technique preferred.
    • For any certifications or licenses not possessed upon hire, certifications or licenses must be promptly attained and regularly
    maintained.

    Physical requirements:
    • Some heavy lifting;
    • Ability to move freely throughout a four-floor, 106,996 square foot athletic and recreation facility, as well as all outdoor
    athletic facilities.
    • It is expected that the individual in this position will work at times other than, or in addition to, normal business hours and
    days, including attendance at numerous evening and weekend events. This is especially true from August to May.

    Environmental conditions:
    • Indoor and outdoor.

    Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:
    • Standard computer hardware and software applications;
    • Be able to drive a 12-passenger van and golf carts


    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Regular and predictable attendance is essential.     • Oversee the daily operations of the athletic training clinic; including, but not limited to: first aid and emergency
    care, injury evaluations (assessment and diagnosis of athletic injuries and illnesses), injury management, and injury
    counseling, treatment and rehabilitation;
    • Ensures the quality and quantity of medical care available to student-athletes is appropriate for the particular
    activity behind conducted by providing the Director of Athletics with guidance and direction regarding such
    matters as athletic insurance coverage, coordination with physicians to ensure proper care and supervision during
    athletic events and/or training sessions, maintenance of medical rehabilitation equipment, and the student
    training aide program;
    • Coordinate and provide timely medical referrals when appropriate;
    • Manage the College’s medical insurance policies and relationships and handle all insurance billing claims and
    procedures;
    • Maintain up-to-date medical records and documentation;
    • Maintain working relationships and open communication between student-athletes, athletic training and College
    staff, coaches and other health care professionals, including the contracted team physician(s) and visiting teams;
    • Travel with teams as necessary or required;
    • Institute and oversee the College’s random drug testing program for student-athletes;
    • Establish and monitor the department’s lightning detection system and heat-related protocols;
    • Work with the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator to develop and administer a comprehensive injury
    prevention program;
    • Work with the College dietician to provide meal education and nutrition information to student-athletes and
    coaches;
    • Establish a forum for staff in Counseling Services to provide mental health education to student-athletes and
    relay any concerns to their office;
    • Assist the Compliance Coordinator with processing any student-athlete medical hardships;
    • Oversee the scheduling, organization and completion of student-athlete pre-participation physical examinations,
    educational programs and administer all NCAA and Berea College-mandated medical paperwork;
    • Hire, train and supervise the Assistant Athletic Trainer;
    • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate a team of student training staff;
    • Manage the First Aid/CPR/AED certification requirement for the department, ensuring all head and paid
    assistant coaches and student athletic training assistants maintain current certification;
    • Manage the golf cart certification procedures for the department;
    • Schedule and coordinate athletic training staff and students for coverage of all team practices and athletic
    competitions;
    • Provide coverage for practices and home competitions in conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Trainer;
    • Serve as a CAATE Accredited Clinical Preceptor;
    • Serve as Athletics Health Care Administrator according to NCAA guidelines;
    • Serve as a member of the Athletic Department compliance team;
    • Assist the Director of Athletics with developing and managing the athletic training budget;
    • Monitor inventory of supplies and manage supply orders;
    • Continue professional development and maintain continuing education units required by the Board of
    Certification;
    • Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that would benefit student-athletes or the athletic
    training program;
    • Conduct an annual inspection of all training room equipment and ensure their continued functionality;
    • Regularly review and update departmental Emergency Action Plans and all policies, procedures and manuals and
    provide information to the Sports Information Director for web pages related to sports medicine;
    • Support the institution’s mission and purposes;
    • Related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

    Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the
    enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
