  • Special Education Support Staff is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of School Nurse who will service schools in the Las Vegas Valley to serve in North Las Vegas. This is a 1099 hourly contract (part-time or full-time).

    SCHOOL NURSE POSITION SUMMARY:

    The professional school nurse’s primary role is to promote the health and well-being of students, thereby facilitating student success and achievement. The school nurse oversees the health services programs at multiple school sites. School Nursing services are provided to both regular and special education students as mandated under federal and state laws. School nurse has to be an RN with a Bachelor degree.

    School nurse has to be certified by the Nevada Department of Education in the area of School Nurse. Prior nursing experience required, preferably in school nursing or pediatrics. This person will be expected to adhere to the Standards of School Nurse Practice, Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada State Board of Nursing Advisory Opinion. (NRS ch. 632and 391; NSBN).

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Implements a comprehensive student health program.

    2. Provides training and on-going monitoring of the FASA (unlicensed charter school personnel) involved in the delivery of student health services, in accordance with the charter school and state requirements

    3. Supervises the maintaining of student health records.

    4. Assesses and evaluates the health and developmental status of students for the purpose of identifying physical disorders and other factors affecting the learning process, communicating with the primary care provider, and writing present levels for MDT and IEPs by contributing significant information in order to modify the student’s individualized educational health plan.

    5. Attends all Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings for student with a disability in the eligibility categories of Health Impaired, Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired, and Orthopedically Impaired.

    6. Collects needed documentation from primary care providers for students with 504s as needed.

    7. Collects needed documentation from primary care providers for students entering a Homebound program as needed.

    8. Conducts health screenings as required by law; e.g., hearing, vision, scoliosis, height, weight. Interprets student health assessment information for students, parents/guardians, and school staff, as appropriate

    9. Complies with state and public health authority mandates including but not limited to communicable disease management, immunizations, first aid training, and Epi Pen usage.

    10. Complies with state and federal law regarding reporting of suspected child abuse.

    11. Performs and coordinates specialized medical procedures for medically fragile students, per appropriate licensed health care provider orders.

    12. Facilitates the provision of student medication at school, per appropriate licensed health care provider orders, in compliance with charter school regulation and procedur

    13. Provides nursing assistance in schools during community/charter school-wide disasters, as able.

    14. Consults with parents / guardians, school staff and community resources regarding student health needs.

    15. Collaborates professionally with administrators, students, staff, parents/guardians, and community representatives.

    16. Participates in meetings, seminars, and conferences and serves on committees, as appropriate.

    17. Participates in other job-related duties and activities related to position, as assigned.

    POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

    1. Comply with and implement related federal and state laws and charter school policies, regulations, and procedures as related to health services.

    2. Maintain confidentiality.

    3. Communicate effectively both written and orally.

    4. Utilize a computer in health-related searches, e-mail communication, data collection and health record, medication and specialized procedure documentation.

    5. Demonstrate general knowledge in the fundamental principles.

    Licenses/Certificates

    Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada Teaching License as a School Nurse.

    This position is a contracted hourly position.
