    Job Description:

    The Division of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Sociology position to begin on August 1, 2024. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach a variety of Sociology, as well as Social Sciences foundation courses contingent to the needs of the concentration of Sociology and the Division of Social Sciences respectively.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Specializing in serving a large native Hawaiian population, effective teaching is the primary
    mission of this position and the University of Hawaii-West O’ahu. The area of specialization is open; however, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the course offerings of the Division of Social Sciences including Social Statistics and/or Research Methods courses, and teach a variety of existing lower and upper-level Sociology courses including, but not limited to: Social Psychology, Small Groups, Sociology of Gender, Juvenile Delinquency, Senior Capstone, and other courses as necessary to meet the needs of the program. The regular teaching load is three courses per semester, and the successful candidate will deliver primarily traditional in-person courses at UHWO campus. The successful candidate is also expected to conduct pure or applied research, and participate in student academic advising, faculty governance, and institutional service. The position carries a competitive salary and travel funds for professional conferences.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    1. Ph.D. in Sociology from an accredited university.
    2. Excellence in teaching as demonstrated by student evaluations and/or administrative reviews.
    3. Active scholarly research agenda demonstrated by peer-reviewed publication(s) and presentations in professional conferences.
    Desired Qualifications:

    1. Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural/indigenous setting; experience teaching and working with highly diverse student body.
    2. Demonstrated ability to teach Social Statistics and/or Social Research Methods courses.
    3. Demonstrated ability to deliver in-person and distance education courses.
    4. Ability to contribute to the Sociology curriculum in the areas consistent with personal interests (e.g., Cultural Sociology, and/or Sociology of Immigration).
    5. Proven ability to write and/or administer grants.
    6. Commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawaii to position the university as a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution.
