As performer-teachers, we are committed to creative excellence and social justice through our deep love of music in all its forms and expressions. Our students are encouraged to be inclusive, independent thinkers, within a learning community that nurtures discipline and cooperation, founded on the belief that music is a fundamental force expressed in diverse ways, with transformative potential for the individual and society.

Both the BA and BM degrees prepare students for advanced collegiate study in music by fostering intellectual and creative expression through research and scholarship, educating students in general ways that enrich, enlighten, and encourage the development of musical expression and appreciation. Students are trained to perform in concerts and other high quality musical events for SF State and Bay Area communities, thereby assisting in the cultivation of audiences for the future.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music offers a humanistic approach to the study of music as a significant aspect of human traditions and cultures. This degree program provides a broad liberal arts preparation with significant study in music. The structure of the degree program offers students several avenues to pursue individual musical interests as preparation for careers in music or music-related fields. In consultation with an adviser, students complete an elective emphasis appropriately focused on their area of interest, which may include western classical, jazz, and other global cultures, along with musicology, ethnomusicology, technology, and composition for film and games.

The Bachelor of Music trains students to perform, compose, and successfully compete in the professional fields of western classical music or jazz, as well as to prepare them for graduate studies in ethnomusicology, while also providing for the development of music educators, in all representing traditions from diverse communities such as those found across the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Master of Arts in Music program provides advanced study for students with highly developed interest and attainment in specific areas of music; prepares teachers for certain types of college music positions; provides prospective doctoral aspirants with a sound foundation for advanced graduate study; provides advanced academic qualifications for public school teachers; and prepares students for professional careers in composition. All emphases require either a culminating creative project or a master's thesis.

The Master of Music program provides graduate study for the superior performer and allows for maximum development of specialized skills in the candidate's particular area of documented achievement. Students may emphasize classical solo performance, chamber music, or conducting. This degree is particularly appropriate for students intending to perform or conduct music professionally, to teach applied performance in college/university settings or private studio, or to pursue doctoral studies in performance. The program culminates in a formal graduate recital.
