The Department of Music Education and Music Therapy invites applicants for the position of Director of Music Therapy. This is a Full-Time, Tenure-Track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position begins in August 2024.

The Wells School of Music serves approximately 450 students with 60 faculty, enjoys full NASM membership, and offers fully accredited degrees in Music Education, Theory, Composition & Studio Composition, Music History, Music Therapy, and Music Performance.

     

    The ideal candidate will demonstrate professional competence as outlined by AMTA and be able to uphold the AMTA Code of Ethics. The candidate will have a clear, consistent, and respectful style of communication, both oral and written, and demonstrate the ability to articulate a vision and engage in creative problem solving. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to collegial and collaborative engagement with colleagues and administrators in and outside of the music school in support of the students, the music school, and the university.  The person will assist in recruiting a high caliber and diverse student population in a thriving university music program. Their experience, substantive specialization, and pedagogical training will serve to strengthen the department's mission and vision. The person will use innovative teaching skills and demonstrate attention to the learning and teaching needs of the department’s students. The incumbent will collaborate with other department faculty and staff to ensure student success.


    Responsibilities include:

    • Direct all aspects of the Music Therapy program
      1. Accountable for upholding the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Standards for Education and Clinical Training and AMTA Code of Ethics
      2. Receives, responds to, and distributes communication from AMTA regarding program status to appropriate music therapy faculty and administration
      3. Responsible for monitoring and communicating eligibility of music therapy students for internship via a letter of eligibility
      4. Responsible for monitoring and communicating eligibility of music therapy students to register for the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) exam
      5. Responsible for submitting budget requests to the department chair for continuing education training needs, inventory needs, and other program-specific items
      6. Assist administration in developing a music therapy equivalency program
      7. Assist administration in developing a graduate degree program in music therapy
      8. Perform duties as Music Therapy Clinical Coordinator. With graduate assistant (GA) and music therapy adjunct support, oversee the following:
      9. Coordinate clinical placements for students, which includes communicating official confirmation of clinical site placements, ensuring that students have all required clearances before stating any clinical or internship site, and monitoring clinical placement hours.
      10. Maintain affiliation agreements with clinical placements sites. This includes initiating affiliation agreements for new clinical training sites, renewing affiliation agreement as needed, collaborating with WCU’s Assistant Vice President of Academic Contract Administration and Compliance Operations and other departments as appropriate
      11. Maintain accurate records of clinical training sites and music therapy supervisors
      12. Advise on the selection of and mentor music therapy adjunct faculty teaching field work and internship courses and music therapy supervisors at the clinical sites
      13. Maintain relationships with field site administrators and music therapy supervisors
      14. Provide a complete list of field & intern site placements each semester to Office of Contract Administration & Compliance Operations
      15. Check and update information regarding clearances, fees, and processes for clinical placements in the WSOM student handbook
      16. Organize and oversee development and implementation of internship supervisor continuing education seminars. This includes developing supervisor training seminar(s), submitting an application to become an approved provider (AP) through CBMT and maintaining AP status, marketing continuing education seminars (free to music therapy supervisors), and disseminating certificates of completion
      17. Work collaboratively with community-based facilitates and organizations to establish opportunities for music therapy professional service and student clinical education
      18. Teach undergraduate courses in music therapy, which may include providing academic and clinical supervision for music therapy students in field work and internship courses
      19. Engage in advising and mentoring music therapy students in the current curriculum, and actively recruit prospective students
      20. Engage in scholarly and creative activities, including but not limited to presentation, publication, and performance
      21. Serve the University and the community through participation in various committees
    • Other teaching assignments will be made based on the candidate’s experience and expertise at the discretion of the chair and/or dean
    • Doctorate in music therapy or a related discipline (music, music education, health sciences). ABD may be considered - must be completed no later than July 30th, 2024. If the doctoral degree is in a related discipline, you must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of graduate credits in music therapy beyond undergraduate equivalency requirements
    • Hold current Board Certified-Music Therapist (MT-BC) credential
    • Have five years of documented professional clinical work experience, or its equivalent
    • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally, and present dynamically to a variety of constituents
    • Record of scholarly or creative activity through presentation, publication, or performance
    • Professional experience related to music therapy advocacy, student education, and community service
    • Documented college experience in the academic and clinical settings educating and supervising preprofessional music therapy students
    • Experience in program development and growth related to music therapy academic curriculum
    • Experience in recruitment and placement of interns
    • Experience in program management, including recruitment and placement of interns, program budget management, and overseeing affiliation agreements
