The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin seeks to hire an Assistant Professor of Practice to direct the Mariachi Américo Paredes de Tejastitlán, the Butler School’s premiere mariachi ensemble. Responsibilities of this position include directing and administering the Mariachi Paredes, including leading students in outreach activities and competitions. Additionally, the new director will direct our second training ensemble and develop and offer courses and/or masterclasses in mariachi pedagogy or other related topics according to individual strengths. The hire may direct and administer a Longhorn Mariachi Camp each summer. The University has been awarded the Seal of Excelencia for its Commitment to Latino Students, as a Hispanic Serving Institution. This is a fulltime, non-tenure track faculty position, and it requires relocation to Austin, TX.
Candidates should submit a portfolio demonstrating a record of excellence as a performer in and teacher/director of mariachi ensembles. Advanced degrees and background in ethnomusicology or music education preferred, but the search committee will consider equivalent professional experience. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to develop and teach mariachi pedagogy courses and/or workshops to students in our Music and Human Learning division as well as teach mariachi techniques and practice to students across different levels of expertise.
