Assistant Professor - Oral Health Sciences

  • The School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Vermont State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Oral Health Science (Dental Hygiene) full-time tenure-track faculty position. This program is offered on the Williston, VT, campus.

    Responsibilities: 

    Responsibilities include teaching didactic courses to Associate and Bachelor of Science Dental Hygiene students.

    Some courses may be offered through a distance education delivery modality, so familiarity with online teaching is beneficial.

    Faculty in this role also provide clinical instruction and supervision to students in the University’s Dental Hygiene Clinic.

    Faculty are expected to follow guidance from designated course leaders, assist students in achieving prescribed program outcomes, ensure competency standards are met, and follow designated course objectives.

    The monitoring of student clinical and competency requirements and supporting the academic success of at-risk students through academic advisement are critical components of the role.

    Responsibilities also include student advising, participation in the activities of the program, and serving on committees at the University. Vermont State University’s full-time teaching load is twenty-four credits per academic year.

    In addition to assigned teaching and advisement activities, faculty are expected to:

    • Stay current on trends in dentistry, best practices, theory, and research.
    • Promote activities for students through networking, collaborating, and partnering with other disciplines.
    • Participate in ensuring that the program curriculum accurately prepares students for the current state of the dental hygiene field.
    • Attend evening and/or weekend faculty meetings, calibration sessions, and accreditation preparation meetings as needed.

    Requirements: 

    Qualified candidates for this position must have:

    • Graduated from a CODA-accredited dental hygiene program;
    • Master's Degree or be currently enrolled in a program to earn a Master of Science degree in Dental Hygiene, Oral Health Studies or related field with an anticipated completion date within 2 years of hire.
    • A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience. Prior teaching experience preferred;
    • Active Vermont Dental Hygiene licensure with local anesthesia endorsement at the time of employment with no sanctions or restrictions;
    • Prior knowledge of educational methodology (preferred) or willingness to complete required educational methodology assignments;
    • Current CPR BLS certification;
    • Professional liability insurance;
    • Ability to endure considerable walking and standing while instructing/supervising students;
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
    • Basic computer skills;
    • Experience with dental practice management systems;
    • Experience with digital imagining system;
    • Active ADHA/VDHA membership.

    An active unencumbered Vermont licensure or eligibility for an unencumbered Vermont license required. A valid driver's license is required. 

    Salary: 
    Based on qualifications and experience as defined by VSC-VSCFF Bargaining Unit Agreement.
