Academic Advisor & Asst Dir for Modern Languages (Hybrid)

  • The Highlights:
    The Assistant Director / Academic Advisor advises undergraduate students in Modern Languages; Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies; Women and Gender Studies; and various LAS interdisciplinary majors (American Studies; African and Black Diaspora Studies; Catholic Studies, Latino and Latin American Studies, Religious Studies, etc.). The advisor reports to the Director of Advising in the LAS Undergraduate College Office and liaises with the chairs/directors of the associated departments/programs. Students in other programs may be added to advising responsibilities if enrollments fluctuate significantly. Responsibilities include direct advising (in-person and online) and the production of advising support materials for students and faculty in multiple formats. The advisor has thorough knowledge of the LAS undergraduate curricula, policies, and procedures; other university academic offerings; and university policies that pertain to undergraduate students. The advisor liaises with department/program faculty and staff, and the Office for Academic Advising Support.


    What You'll Do:

    •  Advises current and potential students regarding course choices, major selection, progress toward graduation, graduate and professional school options, career opportunities, and tuition/financial implications.  Refers students to other university offices when necessary. 
    • Leads and coordinates holistic academic advising initiatives at the department/program level. Assigns appropriate faculty advisors to students based on their academic interests; creates and maintains advising support materials for students and faculty in multiple print and electronic formats; trains faculty on best advising practices; supports faculty mentoring efforts; and makes recommendations to the chairs and the Dean's Office regarding course placements, substitutions. 
    • Attends regular meetings with the LAS Undergraduate College Office staff and the meetings for their assigned academic departments by invitation; provides regular feedback to College Office advising process (new student advising, probation and dismissal, graduation) leaders; assists the Associate Director with accurately accounting for all program requirement changes; assists with degree conferral, newly declared students' record analysis, transfer credit approvals and ensuring the appropriate application of college credit toward the degrees of new, continuing, and graduating Modern Languages; Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies; Women and Gender Studies; and various LAS interdisciplinary majors (American Studies; African and Black Diaspora Studies; Catholic Studies, Latino and Latin American Studies, Religious Studies, etc.); and other declared LAS majors using the Degree Progress Report.  

     

    What You'll Need:

    • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or counseling preferred. 
    • Two years of full-time experience in academic advising or equivalent.
    • Experience with a second language or proficiency in a second language is preferred.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
    • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a group when needed.
    • Ability to interpret and apply policies using good and independent judgement.
    • Ability to juggle numerous projects and tasks simultaneously, and to meet deadlines for each.
    • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office, PeopleSoft, and social media platforms.
    • Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
