JOB SUMMARY: The Associate Director’s scope involves all people operations activities during an employee’s life-cycle with the Center. The Associate Director takes Human Resources functions and humanizes impersonal systems in order to improve employee engagement, development and retention. This position leads the HR Team creating a culture and environment of diversity and pride.
The ideal candidate will support the Center's mission by overseeing and implementing HR strategies, policies, and programs that promote a positive and inclusive workplace culture. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director of Human Resources to ensure the organization attracts, develops, and retains top talent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• In coordination with Director of Human Resources, provide visionary leadership to the organization and the HR team, ensuring effective support for employees and leadership.
• Coordinate with human resources staff to foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
• Support employees on a day-to-day basis and answer questions about benefits and organizational policies.
• Support the process of onboarding new employees and empower them to utilize resources and tools to do their jobs well.
• Responsible for managing the Human Resources Team’s overall work, and ensure a smooth, efficient operation within and across departments.
• Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources in the daily administration of HR services, including recruitment and retention, training and organizational development, labor relations, employee relations, workers compensation, and retirement plan administration in accordance with quality management principles and overall objectives of the organization.
• Advises and instructs department management staff and employees regarding the proper methods and procedures to use on a variety of HR transactions, programs, and issues involving policy or labor law.
• Manage complex and/or sensitive HR functions and services including salary and benefit data research and analysis, benefits program enrollment processes and maintenance, investigation and preparation of management cases regarding employee grievances, appeals and complaints; preparation, presentation and evaluation of agency-wide training programs, and completion of special studies and reports relating to a variety of Human Resource program activities.
• Understand and provide support and management of HRIS database(s), including appropriate data input, reporting, and integration.
• Modernize and digitalize HR systems, including payroll and applicant tracking software.
• Treat employees as internal customers and increase their satisfaction and engagement.
• Develop, prepare, generate, and analyze ongoing and ad-hoc special reports pertaining to employee personnel information and data, including metrics related to staffing, turnover, recruitment, applicant tracking, promotions, etc.
• Identify trends that could affect organizational objectives and /or operational resources.
• Maintain and expand knowledge and understanding of existing and proposed federal and state laws/regulations affecting human resources management.
• Other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
• A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
• Minimum of 7 years of Human Resources experience or related field required, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
• BA degree in human resources, a related field or equivalent experience.
• Considerable knowledge of database systems, proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with superior knowledge of MS Excel.
• Ability to handle complex issues with an employee-centric focus and exceptional organizational skills.
• Working ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, employees, employee representatives and the public.
• Familiarity with Federal and California employment laws including I-9’s laws, basic wage and hour laws, basic workers’ compensation laws, and recruiting.
• Previous work experience with labor unions a plus, but not required.
• Bilingual skills, a plus (English/Spanish fluency preferred).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
