SALARY $160,000 - $180,000

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The General Counsel, Birdon America is responsible for:

• Lead the in-house Legal Team at Birdon and working collaboratively with leadership team on all legal and contract matters.
• Nurture and develop junior legal staff within the team and provide necessary guidance and direction to allow productive and timely execution of all legal matters under the team’s control.
• Advise Enterprise Services Support (ESS) team, Program Managers (PM’s), and executives on contact requirements and responsibilities, and support other departments within Birdon.
• Researching and anticipating unique legal issues that could impact Birdon.
• Negotiate, write, and execute agreements and contracts on behalf of Birdon.
• Advise on contract status, legal risks, and legal liabilities associated with different contracts.
• Ensure all company and program specific risks are identified and where appropriate, insurances are established and maintained.
• Coordinate with General Counsel, Birdon Group, Australia, in the establishment and maintenance of a Document Control system (including record keeping) for US operations.
• Review, write, and provide input into proposals and bids.
• Observe and abide by Birdon’s Integrated Management System (IMS).
• Provide practical risk-weighted advice on a wide range of legal, insurance and contract matters specific to Birdon America projects, industries we operate in, and our strategic growth initiatives.
• Negotiate and draft contractual (and other) agreements with our customers, subcontractors, and suppliers for our operating divisions and handover to Programs or Enterprise Support Services.
• Instruct external counsel or litigation, commercial and regulatory advice as required.
• Assist our stakeholders in understanding and ownership of contractual obligations and regulatory requirements placed on Birdon America.
• Lead our Insurance underwriting, renewal, monitoring and claims processes. Assessing ongoing insurance risks for consideration

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

• Minimum 10 years prior qualifying legal experience with relevant commercial exposure.
• Minimum of 5 years in law counsel experience will be looked on favorably.
• Master of Law (desired) with minimum required of holding Juris Doctor qualifications.
• Desirable, experience in manufacturing or defense industries.
• Strong negotiating skills with both legal, financial, and commercial issues.
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills along with the ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships across the business.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
• Domestic travel will be a requirement for the role.
• Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
• With time variance between Australian and United States there can be early morning and late night, or weekend calls required.
