    Outside is seeking an Associate Editor to support the launch and development of our new gear testing facility: the Outside Lab at CU Denver. The Outside Lab will be a cutting edge testing space that touches all categories of gear that Outside covers and will be integral to our bi-annual Gear Guides and our digital reviews. Think flex ratings for skis, durability rankings for trail shoes, and breathability measurements of shells.

    The Associate Editor will work closely with our Test Editor and Lab Manager to ensure the Lab is running smoothly, tests are supporting current gear reviews, content is being produced on a regular cadence from the Lab, and that our larger Gear Team is getting what they need from the facility. This role will work in a hybrid model, on site at the Lab at least 3 days per week.

    The ideal candidate will be a highly organized and scientifically minded editor with a deep passion for outdoor gear. They will be comfortable wading through spreadsheets and data, analyzing that data, then presenting it to our audience in easily digestible formats. This person is a collaborative team player that excels in a fast-paced media environment with multiple stakeholders.

    Within 1 month, you will:

    • Assist Lab Editor with running first batch of product tests and produce stories showcasing the results
    • Coordinate with gear editorial team on gear intake, inventory, and storage
    • Manage and analyze data coming out of tests
    • Work with our test editor to design and establish a sustainable workflow

    Within 6 months, you will:

    • Work with Gear Team to integrate data with our current field testing
    • Write Outside Lab-specific content for various Outside channels
    • Translate test results into compelling and digestible stories
    • Work with our audience development and video teams on projects that showcase the capabilities of the Outside Lab in fun and engaging ways

    Within 12 months, you will:

    • Attend conferences and outdoor industry events to help spread the word about the Outside Lab
    • Collaborate with CU Denver team on projects
    • Potentially manage small capstone projects within the Lab environment

    What YOU bring to Outside: (Preferred Qualifications)

    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
    • At least 1-3 years of editorial experience
    • Some engineering and/or hard science education or equivalent work experience required
    • Deep knowledge of outdoor products
    • Demonstrated work experience in a cross-functional team environment

    What We Offer:

    Colorado Jobs: Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $49,000 to $63,000. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission. Other benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and many more. The salary range displayed is specifically for those potential hires who will work or reside in the state of Colorado if selected for this role, and may vary based on market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.

    Working Conditions:

    This job operates in professional environments on the CU Denver campus. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers. Work in a laboratory setting with highly specialized machines will also be a major part of the role.

    Exposure to routine office, laboratory, and equipment noise. All of the proper safety precautions will be taken.

    Work hours are typically Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm, however, unusual urgent situations may require the individual to work hours outside of business hours.

    This position may have the option of flexible work schedule and or working remotely.

    Physical Requirements:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently sit, stand and walk. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while setting up and performing Lab tests. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

    Walking: 20% of time
