    DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Under the direction of the Division Dean, the Associate Dean of Health Sciences will exercise innovative leadership in administering programs and courses offered in the Health Sciences division. The Associate Dean will serve as director of the nursing programs and manage respective assigned departments and programs, including budget management and coordination with other campus departments and community organizations in carrying out the District's Strategic Plan. Employees in this job class are overtime exempt, receive administrative direction within a framework of general guidelines, and exercise supervision over faculty and support staff. This is an educational administrative position, which requires excellent communication and strong leadership skills.

    CLASSIFICATION: Range 50 on the Administrative Confidential Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday.

    SALARY: Starting salary is $126,805.55 with $2,000 doctoral differential if applicable. Please refer to the salary schedule for salary range and step increases.     Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability
    Essential Functions:
    • Serve as director of the associate degree nursing (ADN) and licensed vocational nursing (LVN) programs; provide leadership over the certified nursing assistant (CNA), and medical assisting (MA) programs.
    • In coordination with the direct supervisor,
      • Assure compliance of each program with the rules and regulations of related licensing, accrediting and/or regulatory agencies; formulate and submit reports for national, regional and state licensing, accrediting, and/or regulatory agencies; maintain files and records in accordance; assure programs meet the standards of the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), the Board of Vocational Nursing (BVNPT), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the Education Code of the State of California, and the provisions of the Nursing Practice Act.
      • Develop, implement, and evaluate program goals, objectives, policies, and services that are consistent with the College mission; coordinate program review and area planning processes in collaboration with appropriate faculty.
      • Provide direction for curriculum, instructional, and/or program development, equipment, and implementation; evaluate results and make appropriate modifications.
      • Oversee the selection, admission, and progression of students in the programs; coordinate and maintain records on student progress and outcomes.
      • Direct and assist in the preparation and assignment of class schedules and teaching assignments that promote optimal benefit to the program.
      • Monitor faculty load and assignments in the Health Sciences division.
      • Serve as liaison between the college and community healthcare agencies in planning and coordination of clinical facility use; initiate, maintain, and renew contractual agreements.
      • Interpret and apply policies and procedures for mediation and conflict resolution with students, faculty, staff, and external entities.
      • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and processes designed to improve student learning outcomes.
      • Provide direction and supervision to staff and/or faculty employees in assigned areas, including prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring faculty and staff are trained; and make hiring, termination and disciplinary actions with subordinate employees.
      • Direct, oversee, and participate in the development of the department work plan; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
      • Develop, coordinate, and administer budgets; control and monitor expenditures in their respective programs.
    • Engage in professional improvement in order to remain current in the area of responsibility.
    • Direct the development of research materials; provide reports and recommendations on staffing, scheduling, enrollment, services, and other areas as required.
    • Participate in a variety of administrative, board, and other meetings; conduct department meetings.
    • Participate in professional organizations and maintain an understanding and working knowledge of current ideas, research, and practices related to their respective programs.
    • Perform other duties similar to the above in scope and function as assigned.
    Knowledge of:
    • Principles of leadership, management, and supervision including planning, organizing, assigning, and reviewing work; performance appraisal and discipline; employee selection and professional development.
    • Curriculum development and innovation, including the best teaching practices and effective use of instructional technology in a higher education setting.
    • Accreditation self-evaluation processes.
    • COADN (California Organization of Associate Degree Nursing) guidelines for directing a registered nursing program; knowledge of managing other nursing and allied health programs.
    • Budget management and development, including categorical funding.
    • Best practices in Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) design, development, implementation, and assessment.
    • The 10 1 and working with college participatory governance groups in a collective bargaining environment.
    • State and Federal codes, statutes, and regulations that govern California.
    • Current issues, initiatives, and challenges facing California community colleges.
    • Working with a diverse student and employee population.
    Ability to:
    • Manage the activities and operations of college health science programs.
    • Exercise initiative and creativity to meet educational needs and solve problems.
    • Motivate faculty, staff, and colleagues to continually improve programs and services.

    Experience/Education
    Education Required:
    • A master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing education, or nursing administration;
    • One (1) year of experience as an administrator with validated performance of administrative responsibilities consistent with the Nursing Practicing Act, Section 1420(h);
    • Two (2) years of experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure registered nursing programs; and one (1) year of continuous, full-time (or its equivalent) experience with direct patient care as a registered nurse;
      OR
      Equivalent experience and/or education as certified by the Board of Registered Nursing.
    • Possession of a clear and active license to practice as a registered nurse in California.

    • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

    Salary placement would only be negotiable if the candidate held the same position with another community college and step 2 or 3 would be the maximum considered depending on the number of years of service.
