Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     As the only publicly funded social work program in Rhode Island and the sole program offering the MSW degree, the School of Social Work prepares students for practice in the community, in public social service, and in social agencies. For almost 40 years the programs have graduated practitioners, clinicians, advocates, and managers committed to assisting people to meet their basic needs, to accomplish their personal goals, and to enhance social and economic justice.

    The School’s overall mission is to prepare graduates for entry-level and advanced practice by providing knowledge-based and value-informed education concerned with improving social conditions and individual well-being. Its programs prepare practitioners to work with oppressed groups, to alleviate injustice, discrimination and poverty, create social policies and resources that meet basic human needs and enhance the quality of life, and create accessible, responsible, accountable human service programs. The School is committed to achieving social and economic justice in accordance with the NASW Code of Ethics.

    The MSW and BSW programs have been re-accredited until 2026 by the Council on Social Work Education.
    Primary Purpose
    To serve as chief academic officer of the School of Social Work.
    Essential Duties
    Within the School of Social Work (SSW) and in collaboration with faculty and staff of the School, the Dean will:
    • Provide leadership and oversight for faculty, staff and the undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs within the School of Social Work (SSW).
    • Articulate a clear vision for the SSW (both undergraduate and graduate), and promote a culture of respect and unity within the school.
    • Promote a culture of high standards and accountability and uphold the NASW Code of Ethics.
    • Demonstrate a commitment and ability to fostering and nurturing an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff from historically marginalized groups.
    • Work with department chairs and staff to improve and advance all programs and support educational innovation such as online degrees or certificate offerings.
    • Prepare a strategic plan for the SSW reflecting RIC’s current and its emerging Strategic Plan.
    • Promote development of new programs and projects that enhance the missions of the School and College.
    • Promote faculty and staff awareness of social work issues.
    • Oversee completion of accreditation and approval reports required by the College, CSWE, NECHE, OPC, and others.
    • Oversee a continuous quality approach to assessment/evaluation of student progress and program effectiveness.
    • Encourage faculty and staff to achieve goals; support their professional development; promote awareness of opportunities; promote research and scholarship; acknowledge contributions of members.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, mentoring, and shared governance.
    • Participate in hiring, tenure and promotion, and other human resource decisions and recommendations. Review performance evaluations prepared by the department chairs.
    • Support inter-professional education and practice.

    • Collaborate with the Office of Communications and Marketing to promote awareness of the value and accomplishments of the School.
    • Oversee all physical facilities.
    • Develop and augment the School’s budget and monitor expenditures.
    • Improve efficiency of administrative procedures and educational approaches.
    • Build relationships with alumni and encourage support of and involvement in the School.
    • Develop scholarships and other supports for students.
    • Enhance external funding, grants, and development of resources.

    Within the College:
    • Participate in College affairs through academic leadership groups.
    • Demonstrate leadership through committee and project assignments.
    In the Community:
    • Engage in related community events and partnership projects.
    • Participate in discussions of social work issues in local, state, national and global venues.
    • Advocate broadly for the school in local, state, national and global venues.

    Occasional Duties
    • Serve on College committees.
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.


    Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
    • Demonstrated competence as an administrator.
    • Demonstrated comepetence in leadership and supervisory skills such as conflict resolution and interpersonal communication.
    • Demonstrated competence in curriculum development, program assessment, and assessment of student outcomes.
    • Demonstrated competence in working with diverse populations.
    • Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of CSWE accreditation standard and procedures.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of organizations and other environments that provide field placement settings for social work education.


    Required Qualifications
    Education:
    • A graduate degree in social work (master’s) from a CSWE accredited institution and an earned doctorate in social work or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
    Experience:
    • Experience as a social work faculty member at least at the rank of associate professor.
    • At least five years’ administrative experience at the level of department chair, program director, associate dean or higher.
    • Teaching and administrative experience in a CSWE-accredited program.
    • Sufficient experience, scholarship, and/or professional achievement for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bilingual with global experiences.
