    The College of Social Sciences (CSS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is changing the game.     This position serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the CSS. The role of the position is to assist the CSS Dean in developing, implementing, and coordinating academic programs and instructional matters at both the College and University level. The Associate Dean also acts on behalf of the CSS Dean in their absence, carrying on routine business, budget review, and personnel matters.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Academic Affairs

    Provide academic leadership regarding program development, and curricular review. Oversee the review of proposals for the addition, deletion or modification of courses, certificates, minors, degrees and other curricular changes in CSS. Monitor curricular operations within departments, including course enrollments and curricular offerings. This includes facilitative work such as extensive interaction with departments, collecting data, arranging agendas, preparation of materials, etc. Coordinate meetings of the CSS Curriculum Committee. Interact with impacted programs and faculty, including the curriculum committees of other colleges and schools. Refine, communicate and implement academic decisions. This includes routing through channels, maintaining the curricular records of CSS, and serving as an agent for communication of curricular policies. Review and approve courses for fall, spring, and summer sessions, including day session and Outreach College Extension.

    Initiate collegewide curricular innovations, such as certificate programs, interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary programs, and other curricular programs.

    Assist in establishing and maintaining inter-college coordination relative to cross-disciplinary core requirements.

    Coordinate policy and program development of major curricular policy activities on behalf of the CSS Dean. These include, but are not limited to, an academic development plan, review of General Education and other requirements, course articulation with the Community Colleges and private post-secondary institutions, etc.

    In collaboration with faculty and academic staff, coordinate ongoing assessment and evaluation of student learning and program outcomes. Facilitate departmental self-studies and program evaluation including Program Review, external accreditation review, UH-System and Board of Regents reviews (i.e., small course report, small program report, etc.). Collect and compile data required for regulatory/accreditation bodies and assessment. Perform department program research through implementation of assessment methods, data collection, and analysis.

    Oversee faculty awards process, and participate in convocation and honors ceremonies.

    Assist the Dean in developing and implementing CSS faculty workload policies and ensure equitable application across units in undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as enhanced scholarship and professional activity.

    Provide guidance on the recruitment, evaluation, retention, and professional development of faculty and academic staff. Work with CSS Chairs/Directors to complete the annual faculty work assignment template that is required by the Board of Regents. Counsel department chairs in matters related to personnel policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements. Provide evaluation and data regarding promotion and special salary adjustment requests.

    Plan, coordinate and oversee collegewide conferences on academic topics, such as Social Science Colloquium series and Social Science courses, working with other colleges, schools and agencies as necessary for academic content as well as logistics and extending appropriate interaction.

    Foster a student-centered educational environment, responsive to diverse learners. Assist the Director of the Student Academic Services in overseeing CSS student advising and quality student-support services. The Associate Dean works with the team of professional advisors to review, inquire, and take action on student petitions.

    Administrative
    Serve as investigator or decision-maker on behalf of the Dean on issues involving academic or misconduct, workplace non-violence, academic freedom, Title IX, or other grievances or complaints involving CSS faculty, staff, students, or other related parties. Provide investigation or decision on disputes or grievances involving faculty.

    Coordinate the allocation and best use of office, instructional, and program space within and across all CSS units. Work with appropriate college and departmental staff to provide leadership and guidance to respective facilities, such as capital improvement program needs, renovations of existing spaces, and planning for new space needs. Serve as the primary point of contact for CSS with campus and University operational offices.

    Work closely with the Dean’s Office staff, including but not limited to the Administrative Services Manager, Human Resources Specialist, and Budget and Fiscal Specialists to provide insight and assistance to resolve various issues, which may be sensitive or confidential. Develop equitable and transparent allocation of graduate assistants, lecturers, departmental budgets, and other various administrative matters.

    Assist the Dean with the management of college-level instructional support, including IT, communication, media, community outreach, etc.

    Review materials referred by other administrators - policy issues and statements, curricular proposals from other UH units - and explain and/or defend the CSS's academic concerns as affected by other policy-making bodies. Advise and answer inquiries (chiefly from chairs and faculty, infrequently from students) about requirements and procedures.

    Participate in committee meetings, beyond college Curriculum Committee and other college committees and ad hoc committees, includes Manoa-wide committees, assignments from the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence, etc.

    Assist in establishing channels of communication and articulation between the State agencies and the College; participate in workshops, give talks, hold informational meetings with agency employees; and maintain liaison between CSS and statewide professional organizations.

    Other duties
    In the absence of the CSS Dean, carries out the routine work on behalf of the Dean.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Ph.D. or equivalent in the Social Sciences or related field.
    • Attainment of Associate Professor or comparable professional experience prior to appointment.
    • Evidence of knowledge and skill in developing and implementing academic curriculum.
    • Experience planning, developing, and evaluating academic services and programs.
    • Two years experience leading, directing, and evaluating faculty and staff in a higher education environment (for example, department chair).
    • Research, information, and quantitative data analysis skills, including development of databases and analytical methods in support of outcomes assessment.
    • Thorough understanding of liberal education and curriculum as related to social sciences.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in academic program administration and curricular development.
    • Demonstrated experience working with multicultural populations and in promoting diversity, affirmative action, and equal opportunity.
    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

    Desirable Qualifications
    • Attainment of Professor or equivalent.
    • Prior administrative service in a college dean’s office or equivalent.
    • Demonstrated leadership in working with faculty, professionals, students and/or employees in other units within a university.
    • Prior experience and an up-to-date working knowledge of the practices and principles related to college/university accreditation.
