Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

     

    HJF is seeking a Research Associate I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Performs limited analysis and interpretation of results.

     

    This position will be in support of the Department of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD, in the laboratory of Dr. Kathleen Pratt. The position is funded for at least 4 years supporting ongoing research projects include developing substitutes for whole blood for trauma resuscitation; mechanisms and biomarkers of immunothrombosis in severe COVID-19 and Long-Covid; and immune responses of hemophilia A patients to therapeutic factor VIII.

     

    The incumbent will work with a collaborative group and will receive relevant training from experienced senior scientists. USU is in Bethesda, MD, directly across the street from the NIH, and is thus part of an extraordinarily vibrant local biomedical research community. USU has a strongly collaborative environment, with regular data club and journal club meetings, as well as regular research seminars featuring local and invited speakers.

     

    Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years. 

    Responsibilities

    • Plans, conducts, and completes investigations under supervision.
    • Assists with the writing and editing of experimental results for publication in technical and peer-reviewed journals.
    • Performs routine data analysis and verifies and corrects data entry.
    • Maintains records and documentation regarding assigned research.
    • Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation.
    • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
    • Follows all biosafety protocols and maintain lab records and inventories in an organized fashion. Ensures adequate inventory/supplies for laboratory use.
    • Maintains laboratory equipment and performs general procedures such as monitoring, calibration, and preventative maintenance.
    • Receives and processes incoming blood samples from human subjects to isolate peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
    • Conducts cell culture and immunological assays, e.g. flow cytometry, ELISPOTs, ELISAs, and serological assays using human and mouse model samples.
    • Performs staining and confocal imaging of tissue samples from animal models.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures: flow cytometry, western blots, molecular biology, Immunology, and protein chemistry required.
    • Experience with tissue culture, PCR, novel biofluidics assays of blood coagulation, ELISPOT assays, RNA Seq and transcriptomics analysis preferred.
    • Ability to meet deadlines of projects
    • Good communication and analytical skills.

    Physical Capabilities

    • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

    • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

     Education and Experience

    • Master’s Degree
    • Minimum of 0-2 years’ experience required
