Bowie State University is seeking a highly qualified candidate to be part of a dynamic academic team that is focused on the University’s trajectory toward increasing graduate and research experiences. The Dean of the Graduate School provides leadership, coordination, and support for graduate student success by teaming with the University’s five other deans (College of Arts & Science, College of Business, College of Education, College of Professional Studies, and Library Services), department chairs, and graduate coordinators. This position also provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, academic program review evaluation, and assessment as a part of the university’s institutional effectiveness system.
The Dean of Graduate School fosters a graduate culture in which programs can grow and students can be successful. The Dean demonstrates a strong commitment to coordinating graduate program assessment by working with the chairs and coordinators. The Dean provides appropriate leadership in university initiatives that focus on improving graduate student retention and graduation rates. The successful candidate will be a high-energy, highly-skilled professional with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Under the supervision of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean, School of Graduate Studies will be expected to:
- Develop and implement a strategic plan that and is aligned with broader university strategic goals and priorities and pushes the Graduate School to regional and national recognition.
- Reorganize the Graduate School infrastructure to incorporate all graduate school functions into a single coordinated unit under the oversight of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
- Develop strong collaborative working relationships with graduate admissions, financial aid, and other support units located in other university units.
- Coordinate the development, dissemination, and implementation of all policies and regulations related to Graduate School (i.e., University Catalog, Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures Manual, Academic Calendar, etc.).
- Represent the Division of Academic Affairs with units both internal and external to the university related to all matters pertaining to graduate studies including regional, national, and international activities.
- Monitor and assess the university’s graduate programs in the areas of student recruitment, retention, and graduation and recommend appropriate policy changes in these areas.
- Monitor, assess, and document graduate student progression from graduate matriculation the program completion and graduation.
- Work with deans and department chairs to develop accountability procedures and measures for faculty and staff.
- Coordinate the resolution of graduate student problems, grievances, and academic appeals with the appropriate university unit or committee.
- Employ strategies to increase available resources for the Graduate School through grant writing and working with University Institutional Advancement to establish goals and develop contacts.
