    The College of Arts, Languages & Letters (CALL), established in July 2020, anchors the liberal arts and area studies at UH Manoa. CALL is among the largest units on campus, housing sixteen academic departments and multiple national research and resource centers. CALL’s strengths range from the creative arts to a comprehensive focus on the study of languages and language sciences; from the core liberal arts to emerging interdisciplinary collaborations across our College and with other academic programs at Manoa. CALL’s mission is to deliver a high-quality education to our undergraduate and graduate students grounded in proven and innovative pedagogy and benefitting from the original scholarship of our faculty, putting student learning and original research at the forefront of our endeavors. Our faculty are leaders in their fields and produce cutting-edge performances, publications, and other creative and scholarly work.


    This position serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Personnel and Operations for the College of Arts, Languages & Letters (CALL). The role of the position is to serve as a member of the leadership team and assist the CALL Dean in all areas of all matters related to academic personnel, operations, and administration for CALL. The Associate Dean also acts on behalf of the CALL Dean in their absence, carrying on routine business and personnel matters.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


    Academic Personnel
    Provide leadership in the area of academic personnel. Assist the Dean in the review of Contract Renewals, Tenure and Promotion, Periodic Reviews, Salary Adjustment requests, Sabbatical & Leave requests (and post-leave reports). Assist the Dean with developing hiring priorities and position requests in accordance with college initiatives and focus areas.

    Support recruitment, evaluation, retention, and professional development of faculty and academic staff. Work with CALL Chairs/Directors to complete the annual faculty work assignment template. Assist the Dean in developing and implementing CALL faculty workload policies and ensure equitable application across units in undergraduate and graduate teaching and enhanced scholarship and professional activity.

    Counsel Department Chairs in matters related to personnel policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements. Support and ensure departments’ and centers’ compliance for preparation of procedures and criteria for Personnel Committees, personnel reviews, recommendations for Department Chairs, and other provisions governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and university policies.

    Assist the Dean and Department Chairs/Directors with faculty and student complaints and grievances in relation to academic and student affairs, as needed. Facilitate informal investigations and resolutions and assist in the coordination of fact-finding on formal investigations. Work with the Graduate Division and the Office of Student Academic Success to coordinate efforts when necessary.

    Operations

    Work in coordination with the Dean, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Administrative Services Manager in formulating key personnel and budgetary policies, including formulae for the equitable and transparent allocation of graduate assistants, lecturers, department budgets, faculty/APT travel funds for professional development, scholarships, and various administrative matters; resource allocation including strategic Outreach College and Summer course revenue sharing, special outreach programs under Memoranda of Agreement; and assists departments with student fee requests and facilities use fee requests.

    Work closely with the Dean’s Office staff, including but not limited to the Administrative Services Manager, Human Resources Specialists, and Administrative Officers to provide insight and assistance to resolve various issues, which may be sensitive or confidential. Serve as investigator or decision-maker on behalf of the Dean on issues involving academic misconduct, workplace non-violence, academic freedom, Title IX, or other grievances or complaints involving CALL faculty, staff, students, or other related parties. Provide investigation or decision on disputes or grievances involving faculty.
    Coordinate the allocation and best use of office, instructional, and program space within and across all CALL units. Work with appropriate college and departmental staff to provide leadership and guidance to respective facilities, such as capital improvement program needs, renovations of existing spaces, and planning for new space needs. Serve as the primary point of contact for CALL with campus and University operational offices, such as the Campus space allocation committee.
    Assist with the management of college-level instructional support. Oversees CALL IT unit.

    Participate and contribute to committees outside the college for academic, personnel matters, and operations, as needed.

    Other Duties
    In the absence of the CALL Dean, carry out the routine work on behalf of the Dean.
    Other duties as assigned.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


    1. Earned doctorate or terminal degree in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences, or closely related field.
    2. Attainment of Associate Professor or comparable faculty experience prior to appointment.
    3. Two years of experience in leading, directing, and evaluating faculty and staff in a higher education environment.
    4. Evidence of knowledge and skill in developing and/or implementing faculty workload policies.
    5. Demonstrated skill in conducting qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
    6. Thorough understanding of Liberal Arts education in higher education.
    7. Demonstrated ability to provide administrative leadership in academic programs.
    8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
    9. Evidence of an established record of academic and professional mentorship.
    10. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in formats such as presentation, facilitation, policy/procedure development, reports, etc.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Attainment of Professor or equivalent.
    2. Prior administrative service in a college dean’s office or equivalent.
    3. Experience as a program director or department chair.
    4. Responsibilities for space management, including the allocation/assignment of space.
    5. Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills.
    6. Demonstrated ability to assess and address complex issues, especially personnel issues, in higher education.
    7. Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements in Hawai‘i and higher education.
    8. Knowledge of relevant University of Hawai‘i policies and procedures.
