    Job Summary:

The Earlham College Music Department invites applicants for a full-time, three-year position in jazz and allied fields, to begin August, 2024. We are seeking a dynamic jazz director who is a strong recruiter and is dedicated to the liberal arts. They should have strengths in one or more of the following: jazz and Western classical music theory, musicology (including ethnomusicology, popular music studies, or sound studies), music production, or music business. Background in music education a plus. Duties include directing the jazz program and teaching two courses in one or more of the above areas each semester. A completed doctorate or equivalent professional experience is preferred; previous teaching and directing experience is essential.

Our music curriculum fosters respect for all musics: music majors study ethnomusicology, Western musicology, and popular music, in addition to music technologies. Our ensemble offerings reflect a similar approach. The curriculum is also designed to spark connections across disciplines, both within and outside the arts. The music department is housed in a superbly designed visual and performing arts facility. Earlham’s foundational Principles and Practices, which stem from Quaker practice, inform our department’s philosophy and its close working relationship with each student.
