    Position Description

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Jose State University (SJSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Applicants must have a strong academic background in mechanical engineering, as evidenced by a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field, and expertise in the broad area of mechanical design. This position will be required to teach mechanical design courses to students in our bachelor's and master's programs and conduct research in a closely related area. Preference will be given to applicants with a research focus on one of the following areas of design: mechanical systems design, design optimization, design automation, or applications of machine learning / AI in design.

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering is home to nearly 900 undergraduate and graduate students, dedicated full-time faculty members, and part-time instructors from Silicon Valley industries who bring current practices. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at SJSU has three stems: design, mechatronics, and thermal-fluid sciences. Design and thermal-fluid sciences are the backbones of all accredited mechanical engineering programs in the country. Mechatronics is a departmental specialty at SJSU and offers our students another fascinating and marketable field of study. Our hands-on curriculum incorporates a multitude of laboratory experiences to put classroom theory into practice. Our award-winning design projects demonstrate how innovative our students and faculty are at designing and building creative ideas that make a difference.     Required Qualifications

    • Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field

    Priority will be given to candidates with research experience in one of the following areas: mechanical systems design, design optimization, design automation, or applications of machine learning / AI in design.

    Key Responsibilities

    • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
    • In addition to teaching engineering courses, faculty members in the department are expected to develop curricula and laboratories and should plan to establish externally funded research programs and publish peer-reviewed scholarly work. Faculty members advise undergraduate and graduate students via project mentorship and academic planning.
    • Faculty will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
