Part-Time History Teacher for Profoundly Gifted Students
  • The Davidson Academy
  • Reno, NV PART_TIME
  • We're looking for someone to teach two sections of a Modern World History course to students ages 12-15. If you are also able to teach English Literature, we may have a full-time option available. Please submit both a resume and a cover letter to Indeed. The cover letter should include: your relevant background, why you are interested in teaching at this school, and why you believe you are a good candidate for this position.

    Our core classes run M-TH, and you would have two courses (hour-long) with an average of 10-13 students in each section. On the lightest weeks, you would just be responsible for teaching for 8 hours (2-hours a day, 4 days a week). Other weeks will require a number of hours for preparation and grading. Your pay will reflect the time needed outside of class, as well as the time spent teaching.

    The Davidson Academy, a secondary school in Reno, Nevada, serves profoundly gifted students who progress through a rigorous curriculum in which students are grouped by ability, not by age. While the DA is a public school, all students must score in the 99.9th percentile on nationally-normed intelligence and/or achievement tests, and they must go through a curriculum-based, day-long assessment to gain admittance. Located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, the Academy is designated by Nevada legislation as a “university school for profoundly gifted pupils” (NRS Chapter 388C). Applicants must be qualified history teachers, though certification is not required as many of our teachers are professors.The ideal applicant:

    • loves the excitement and challenge of working with dedicated, passionate young people;
    • will provide a copious amount of high-quality written feedback designed to rapidly strengthen students’ thinking and writing skills;
    • has both depth and breadth of knowledge in the field;
    • is responsive to students and will adjust lesson plans appropriately while maintaining the integrity of each class;
    • demonstrates compassion, flexibility, humor, joyfulness, friendliness, fairness, and enthusiasm;
    • enjoys collaborating with colleagues and is responsive to feedback and guidance;
    • is comfortable with the principles of philosophy, psychology, history, critical thinking, writing instruction, literary analysis, and rhetoric;
    • has the ability to teach at a college level but will provide the scaffolding, warmth, and support that is appropriate for secondary students;
    • possesses strong communication skills: speaking, writing, and listening;
    • loves teaching small groups of students, will work with students one-on-one when needed, and rather than equating "fewer students" with "less work," sees small class size as an opportunity to engage with and influence students on a deeper level.

    Facts about the position and the interview process:

    • The curriculum for our classes has been created specifically for our students, so you would be using these materials, and adapting them as needed throughout the year.
    • About half of our students move across the country for this school, so we require outstanding teachers to match the dedication of these families. Our teachers range from having a B.A. to a Ph.D., and their teaching experience ranges from very little to 30 years. What matters the most is a high level of dedication, talent, intelligence, caring, and enthusiasm.
    • One of the best parts of this job is working with extremely motivated, intelligent, engaged students. Our middle school humanities courses are based on high school and entry-level university courses, and our students, often coming straight out of elementary school, tackle the curriculum with pleasure. Participating in their growth is very rewarding.
    • We will interview the top candidates for this position.
    • Then, select candidates will be asked to provide written feedback on student work based on an exemplar we provide.
    • Top candidates will be invited to “audition” by teaching for an hour--we'll be looking for your ability to connect well with this population.
    • Compensation based on years of experience and level of education.
