    Position Summary Information

    Position Purpose
    The Assistant Director of Military Student Services reports to the Executive Director of Student Conduct, with a connection to the Executive Director of First Year Experience to ensure services to student-veterans in the Military Resource Centers. The incumbent supports activities and events coordinated and provided by the admissions office, provides academic support to military-connected students, coordinates military-connected student services, and is responsible for meeting institutional military enrollment targets through a combination of re-enrollment activities, new student recruitment, advocacy, policy advancement, and general support for military-connected students across all campuses.
    The home campus is Bloomsburg with the expectation that the incumbent will travel and/or use technology to perform and accomplish the varied and complex responsibilities of this position at all CUPA locations (Lock Haven, Mansfield, Bloomsburg).

    Description of Duties
    Re-enrollment/Advisement Duties/Military Student Support

    • Provide academic success guidance and support to military-connected students who do not have a major. Act as a resource to military-connected students who have already declared a major.

    • Assist assigned students with the scheduling and registration process.

    • Monitor academic progress and provides appropriate academic advice and support, especially to those who are experiencing academic difficulty.

    • Assist military-connected students in understanding degree-granting process, academic standing, general education requirements, and course selection.

    • Support military-connected students with navigating potentially conflicting military and university obligations.

    • Manage operations in the Office of Military and Veterans Resources.

    • Guide incoming and current students through military benefit usage.

    • Serve as a School Certifying Official for VA education benefits. Lead and collaborate with other institutional certifying officials as needed.

    • Military Academic Credit Review Board – Collaborate with Workforce Development and assist as requested, helping students navigate the MAC-RB process. Promote awareness of the credit award process to both internal and external military-connected constituents.

    • Co-Chair of Military and Veterans Learning Community- Redevelop and launch a military-connected learning community. Assist in staffing, programming, and coordinating related resources.

    • Maintain productive relationships with staff, faculty, and administration to advise on the needs of military-connected students.

    • Provide assistance and support, as needed, to support the efforts to recruit students interested in ROTC.

    • Hire and supervise VA Student Workstudy, GAs and other students to staff the Military Resource Centers and services to support military-connected students.

    • Develop, coordinate, and implement programming to support the student experience and expand student-veteran engagement within Commonwealth University.

    New Student Recruitment

    • Conduct phone and email follow-ups with key military-connected inquiries and applicants.

    • Coordinate and host campus visits and special campus programming for potential military-connected students..

    • Assist with onboarding and orientation of new military-connected students and addressing their unique needs to help transition to college life.

    • Establish and cultivate relationships with local military recruiters and military officials.

    • Develop and update military-related marketing materials and webpages

    • Some night and weekend work will be required.


    Decision Making
    Incumbent can make undergraduate admissions decisions in most programs, budget and administrative decisions related to Office of Military and Veterans Affairs.

    Fiscal Responsibility
    Manages the cost center related to the Military and Veterans Resource Center. Manages the VA Work Study Program.

    Supervisory Responsibility
    Hires and supervises interns, Graduate Assistants, and student workers through the VA Work Study Program.

    Minimum Requirements Profile
    • Bachelors degree required, Masters in related field preferred or earned within 2 years of hire .
    • Prior military experience or exposure
    • Experience in academic advising
    • Experience with coordination of military benefits
    • Ability to enter military bases and government buildings
    • Valid Driver’s license
